I need to fit a rear roll hoop into my Vixen, quickly. I'm sure I've seen a previous thread on this subject but can't find it.

Can anyone provide info on specification, options for design, mounting & fitting.

It is a road going car so fully trimmed interior and I need it to minimise impact on trim. However it must meet the MSA K60(I) spec.

Will anyone have one off the shelf or will it need to be a bespoke build. Any recommendations on suppliers, fitters or better still someone who will do both.

I live near Worcester.

Will fitting require body off or just a slight lift?

Cheers

Your answer depends on how good your chassis is and how sound your body mounting plates are
As a minimum seats and back screen out to make it possible to weld in the rear stay reinforcement plates to bolt the rear legs to.

In theory the cage should be mounted steel to steel but you can get away with just drilling the floor at the rear of the footwells. You can and should cut this section of floor and fibreglass back in without removing the body. if your corner plates are thin then they should be changed for thicker ones which can be done in situ but its a bit of a pain.

Shorty used to do them at Rollcentre but I think he sold up to safety devices.
There are a few suppliers out there, custom Cages, Protection 4 performance, I am pretty sure that Nigel Ruben will also fit one or supply you with one to fit.

Hi, I've got a Rollcentre one you can have, not sure of its certification but it's never been used.

Thx for the suggestions. My first call was to Nigel as he has done much of the work on my car to date. Unfortunately he is up to his neck in getting his own cars ready for their first race which has to take priority for obvious reasons. Hence looking for alternatives.

Phil thanks for your offer. You have mail.

Neil, understand your comments in terms of fitting front feet. That all seems do'able. The chassis is in relatively good condition but I would almost certainly weld in thicker corner plates for strength. I do prefer the idea of bolting through the existing floor purely to cause as little irreversible damage to the shell.

However can a bracket for the rear feet be bolted to the chassis or does that have to be welded?

Can be bolted through the floor. The rear feet can bolted.

be bolted.
The cage is bolted in at all points but you need to weld a pick up bracket on the chassis at the top of the diff cage to have something to bolt to. How you do this depends on the cage which is supplied. In terms of the rear of the floorpans as said in theory you can just drill and bolt through to the corner plates but you generally always have an uneven gap (air space) and a potential shear point at the cage feet.... The potential weakness in negligible but this could also be grounds for rejecting the suitability of the cage if it is being used for competition and requires to pass scrutineering. There have been instances of some bracketry being made to allow a cage to bolt up to a rear suspension pick up point but technically this doesn't meet the specs laid down for cage feet in the blue book. :-)

If you are not sure and you are using the car for competition then you are best paying a pro to install. smile

Re the Roll Centre cage. my race car one is Roll centre Fia. so I am quite happy to show you the mounting brackets which require welding in for its fitment.

Neil,

All being well I'll be going with the Rollcentre hoop so seeing a photo of your bracket would be helpful.

Thx

Just wondering if anyone can give some advice on roll cages and scrutineering. How strict are the scrutineers when it comes to checking roll cages, do they dig around and check anchorages if these are not visible?
