When i last drove my 3000S when the engine was hot it started misfiring. After changing the ht coil twice + rotor arm the problem was still there.
The car has a Piranha electronic system which i think was fitted 25+ years ago.
I have taken a backward step and fitted Points + Condensor to see if things change.
When i removed the Piranha system i found it had been badly fitted with lots of joins in the cables and many of them changing colour along the cable run a real Rat's nest.
When i take the car for a run i will see if there is any difference

I have also added a Fused Relay for the Coil supply so it always gets a full 12 volt + less power going through the Ignition Switch.

It would have been better if you wired the blower, wipers plus anything else taking 6 amps or more through an 80 amp heavy duty relay or individual relays and left the coil supply direct to the ignition switch, my reasoning being that relays sometimes hold-in due to electrical faults, they sometimes stick and sometimes fail, an ignition switch with coil current flowing through it will last a long time

Don't get me wrong, I love relays and when I die I want to come back as one, but.....

Do the S series have an 80 amp fuse?

I know that most Griffs and Chims do.

However my early Griff hasn't and my 350i didn't, so I had always assumed that the S didn't.

However, I have never owned an S, so I could be wrong on that.

Thanks for the replies and different ideas.
I fitted the Fused Relay so if there is a problem with Engine running on with Ignition turned off i can just remove the Fuse.
I don't fancy adding any more Relays at the moment.
For sure i will look at Electronic Ignition again at a later date.

Hi Dunc

I'm afraid that a 3000S is not an S series it's an M series without the roof. It has the Ford Essex engine a nd not the Ford Cologne of the S series. It also only has 4 fuses and the higest rated is 25 amps.

Alan if you decide to go back to electronic ignition i can recommend luminition although dearer than others i have had many trouble free miles with it on two cars and i know of others that are the same plug and play and once done right is bullet proof.

I appreciate that, and am sorry for the error in terminology.
My point was I didn’t think anything earlier than early / mid 90s had a big fuse. I hadn’t realised that one been retro fitted to this car.

Thanks Andrew,
I've made note of that good info.
We're having good weather here in Brittany and i just want to have a blast along the coast.
With the ragtop down of course.

Well the mod to fit a Fused Relay to the Coil didn't last long. I started the Car and when i switched off the Ignition it carried on running. Yes you guessed the new Fused Relay stayed locked on and i had to remove the Fuse to stop the Engine. So i've removed the Relay and put back to original

Well i've just come back from a drive along the Coast and my 3000S goes like the Wind fantastic.
With the standard new Points + new Condensor. I set the Timing Static at 10° advance, started the Engine and checked with a Strobe on Tickover (didn't need moving spot on).
I hope i can just drive it now with a big smile.

Did you test to see if the relay was faulty or if there was a voltage holding it in?
