On my 1976 3000M i have noticed a lot of play in the Top Steering Column Bush.
The Steering Column seems "Triumph" like on my Lotus Elan Sprint so i think i can replace the Top Column Bush from usual sources like "Rimmer Bros".
Can i replace the Bush by removing Steering Wheel and extracting Bush from the Top.
Thanks in advance
Alan

When I did mine, I just removed the steering wheel and tapped the existing bush further down the column, then fitted the new bush.

I found it easiest to cut the little lugs off with a craft knife through the holes in the side of the column surround then tap the bushes out with a piece of wood. getting them back in takes a bit of giggling. I put some fairy liquid on mine to help them slip down the column surround

Uprated bush available............. clicky

If you want to get the old bush out (rather than Tim's easy fix) it's a column strip down job, and getting those uprated ones in is "good fun" wink

They are well worth fitting though as the rubber ones dont last long.

I wouldn't use washing up liquid as a lube near metal, as it contain masses of salt. Silicone grease is your best friend.

Go for the poly bushes. The rubber bushes I fitted were rubbish and only lasted a couple of years. I didn't even bother to remove them, just drove in the new poly bush from either end of the column to displace them so now have a four bush set up! I wouldn't even try this without removing the column which isn't a difficult job. I fitted mine in an afternoon. Made a big difference.

Thanks Boys,
i like the idea to push the old Bush further down the Column and put the new one in it's place. The Column Tube being in alloy can be damaged very easily.

Column removal is a chore over and above doing it in situ but it’s just time. Make sure you mark the column top section position on the lower section as it determines the horn tolerance. Too tight and you’ll sound the horn when you turn a corner!

Would this bush decrease the in and out movement on the column ?

If your column moves in and out you need to look at the joint between upper and lower columns urgently!

This movement should be zero if the clamp bolt is tight

I should add this joint is in the engine bay in the region of the mechanical fuel pump....
