I know this has been done before, but without complete conclusion I believe.

The Volvo V40 and S40 early 4 stud wheels fit but on those for sale the centre seems to project outward so the wheel needs to be stored front up. That means the inner well of the wheel is lost to storage which is a really handy bit of space for jack/brace etc etc.

The TR3 wheel I have as a spare at the moment is fine but only about an inch narrower than the TVR finned alloy so doesn't save much and still a pain to lift over the seats.

Does anyone have a link, photo, spec or detail of something that fits and is a decent bit narrower than the TVR alloy - and can also be stored front down? I'm thinking there is an ideal out there somewhere and possibly even an alloy spacesaver.

To illustrate -

V40 etc with centre too far out so has to sit upside down

V40 etc with centre too far in:

9mm ply cut in a ring although it might be better with 12mm. Cheap and cheerful.

I use a v40 space saver and a cover and I store a small bottle jack wrapped up in a small towel under the wheel, rather than on top. I also have a small tool roll that pops down behind the passenger seat. Works for me.

Exactly the same here - bottle jack and towel but TR3 wheel upside down.
Is your v40 wheel the type that projects?
The purpose of the original question was to find an absolute ideal and I think there will be a narrow space saver out there that doesn’t project - it may indeed be the second of the two photos.

Must be a very small bottle jack if it will fit under the chassis especially once the tyre is flat?

Got some details/dimensions/picture please?

You are dead right. I don't know why I said that! I have a bottle jack and I can't even use it when the tyres are inflated, never mind a flat. Fortunately I have a nice little trolley that slides under a treat but the jack in the car is a small mechanical scissor type. There is also room for the tool roll as well but I tend to keep it tucked behind the seat for easy access. I will have a look at the wheel to see if it looks the same as the one in the photo.

Its a small Draper bottle jack less than 4" tall - I have to say I dont like it as its only got a small top so I use a wood spreader plate and also on the front I jack from beneath the engine mounts which are inboard so have to get it started by hand with a screwdriver as far as possible before attaching the rod.

I have a standard Vixen high back passenger seat and a very high / wide Cobra race drivers seat. I take the spare (Vixen fin fitted with 195/65 tyre) out before each track event and put back in after - so 6 to 10 times a year. It is easy to do if you place through the passenger door, then tilt and roll into position.

I do agree that it may be nice to have it located under the bonnet as per 'M' series - mainly for additional front crash protection. Also I would cover the trim with a cloth if putting a wet and dirty flat into the car. But it's not really a problem and it looks good seeing the pretty spare 'fin' through the back screen with the Vixen centre.

I doubt there are any Vixens with the spare under the bonnet there’s zilch space?
