I've just gone to replace the battery on my 3500M, and found that the knackered one that was fitted (and needless to say is the one which spec I used to order the new battery) is physically too big and is rubbing against the inner wing.
It is actually sitting on top of the cradle that's supposed to locate it, the dimensions of which are approx 23.8cms long and 14mm wide. The previous battery was 19cms high and was clear of bonnet.
So, in order to shorten my search, any suggestions, bearing in mind that it has to turn over 4.6 litres, but can't be huge like my Land Rover one?

Yes - I looked there. Difficult to find a battery that size with sufficient cranking amps, but at least I now have some options.

I have an Mx5 battery fitted which fits nicely in the tray. I can’t remember what year Mx5, but I imagine you’d need one of a higher rating.

You could buy a Varta, but since you can not go wider as 140mm its going to be a bit higher then the 190mm think of 225mm is that possible?
40 or 45ah is more then enough.
In my V8 Z3 bmw cars I use the Vrata B36 which is 44ah and has more than enough power, it also loads faster then the 75ah

can you fit this?
Lengte 187mm
Breedte 127mm
Hoogte 227mm

or
Lengte 238mm
Breedte 129mm
Hoogte 227mm

or
Lengte 219mm
Breedte 135mm
Hoogte 225mm

Then Varta has some good battery's for your car if you can get away with the highest, the 40 or 45ah is enough,
it is good enough for my ex Hartge Z3 coupe 5.0 V8 and my ex Z3 coupe 3.0 and now my Z3 S65 with S65B40 M3 V8

this one is 140mm width and 40ah

or one of those if you can get away with the hight, I also came across some of another brand with 200mm hight and <140mm width with 40<>45ah

When i need a battery for my car i measure what will fit in the space + position + orientation of terminals.
Then go to the local hypermarket and see what they have with the most power.

Go to the websites for Oddessey, Northstar and Optima and they list the dimensions for everything in there range along with the cold cracking amps and capacity.

Then just go onto eBay and search for that particular battery part number.

None of those three makes will be cheap but they are decent batteries.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I had (finally) realised that checking the maximum height I could use was the way forward.......there are indeed several good choices to be had as long as the bonnet will clear 225mm
