Can a camshaft be changed on an Essex V6 in situation. That's to say without removing the Engine.
I have done this on a 1600 kent Engine using magnets to stop the cam followers falling into the sump.
Can it be done on an Essex

I would be very warey about using magnets on Cam followers. If you end up magnetising the followers they will attract all the swarf from the new Cam bedding in and general wear and will cause very early camshaft wear.

Then it is a very good point that I hadn't thought of, good call.

I've changed a cam in situ on a 1985 Granada so I'd say yes.

I don't think the Sump Drain Plug is magnetic to collect the magnetic debris.
Is there that much debris from a new Camshaft.
Has someone fitted a magnetic Drain Plug to collect debris or swarf from machining.

I use magnetic plugs on my RV8 rebuilds.

You usually get a very fine dust build up on the plug from the cam.

Alan.

Yes I used one on my Griffith as an early warning system for problems. The Rover engine had a habit of eating camshafts so any sign of metal on the sump magnet meant a problem was starting. One of the best ways to spend £10 IMHO.

If you are replacing the cam, you should be replacing the lifters/followers, as well. If you plan to re-install the cam you're removing, there shouldn't be any worry about wear, between the lobes and the followers.

Best,
B.
