Wishbone bushes
Discussion
Well, I knew as a mechanical newbie not to expect everything to run smoothly but even the smallest task is fighting me. When garage time is so hard to come by, (2 teenagers).
Last night I fitted the inner/outer races to the front hub, grease packed and fitted the outer. Tiny progress but enough to keep me content.
Tonight I removed the upper wishbone bushes and noted that each bush was split in half. (See pic) Is this a bodge by a previous owner after being unable to fit them intact?
These are poly but on Adrian's advice I'm using rubber for the uppers and poly for the lowers. Problem being I cannot get the rubber items to fit, using a vice and 2/3 in the rubber begins to bulge and refuses to go any further (see 2nd pic).
I'm sure I've read on another thread that these should be push fit?
Garage door locked and sulking.I will probably need a replacement bush after this stays out of shape overnight.

A word of caution on your choice of lubricant ...
Anything petrochemical based (eg Vaseline and Swarfega) will rot rubber (which is why water-based KY was invented...rubber... work it out...). Do you want to accelerate the rotting of your new rubbers?
Washing-up liquid is laden with salt (which is why you don't wash cars with it or use it in screen wash), do you want a salty liquid in your bare metal bush housings? another
Not sure about the rubber-rotting properties of WD40 as it's based on fish guts, but IT IS NOT A LUBRICANT!!! Rub some between your fingertips and you'll see. It's a (terribly outdated) penetrating 'oil' (without any oil).
Modern (ie synthetic) 'maintenance sprays' like GT75 and ACF-50 are more rubber friendly and better lubricants, but far and away your best friend is silicone grease, available in tubes from Maplins, RS Components etc. Effectively inert and proper slippery.

Ok, I was unaware of the 2 piece poly bushes, the new poly ones I have a single piece.
I was also unaware if ANY lubricant should be used depending on whether the bushes are supposed to remain tight in relation to the wishbone housing (and any movement should be taken up by the inner sleeve) If lube is suggested then I have red rubber grease which should do. Having said all the above, I'm still thinking the replacements are oversized, does anyone know if the wishbone bores varied over the years? It's a TVR, so they must have!

Early M's have a smaller bore than the later ones.I was also unaware if ANY lubricant should be used depending on whether the bushes are supposed to remain tight in relation to the wishbone housing (and any movement should be taken up by the inner sleeve) If lube is suggested then I have red rubber grease which should do.
