Here is a photo of a Fan belt bearing/pulley mod a friend has done.
What do you think and do you have an alternative idea.

Maybe easier to change than fitting a new bearing in the front cover

The engine in my Taimar doesn't have a bearing in the front cover, drive belt just goes round crank, alternator and water pump. what purpose does your additional pulley serve?

I appreciate the original was there to drive a fan but not required on a TVR.

I cant see that staying on for long i use the original with the fan removed and the bolts shortened

No real need to re invent the wheel

You may also find that the alternator Fouls as it is so much higher
You certainly wont close the bonnet with that air filter

Works fine as Mr Phillpot suggests. That's the way my racer is set up. Revs to 8k and never thrown a belt. Poor photo to try and show front cover modified to remove the pulley.

Interesting looking at the front bottom pulley. Does anyone know what the out of balances are for the Essex?

Mike Bigland has a very similar setup on his Taimar. He mentioned it improving the grip on the water pump too, or maybe it was improved grip on the alternator, can't remember now, biggrin.

No more belt contact on water pump, bit more on alternator but I've never had trouble with "belt squeal", the usual tell tale sound of belt slipping scratchchin

Did similar belt mod on my Scimitar (with Essex engine), after fitting uprated alternator with smaller pulley to handle uprated lighting etc (especially at engine "cruising" revvs when overdrive engaged). Mod gave better belt wrap round on alternator pulley to avoid belt squeal/slip.

Do you by any luck have a photo. On my 3000M the previous owner fitted a higher output alternator also Lucas ACR 60A

I am unsure if two photos have attached. If Not I will reply again.

The idler "pulley" mounting bracket was fabricated from a bit of scrap. I do not remember if I needed longer cam gear cover bolts. It had a couple of alternative holes for the idler "pulley" to allow adjustment of the bearing position to suit the alternator position once the belt was tensioned.

The idler "pulley" is a ball bearing of the type that has seals on both sides.
Stepped washers wrere made to adapt the bore of the bearing to suit the diameter of the mounting bolt. The nut for the bearing securing bolt was welded to the back of the bracket.

Without the idler pulley the belt between the alternator and the crankshaft "fluttered" (harmonic vibration).

The alternator pulley was specially made as I could not find a suitable existing one. (Most new alternators have a multi-groove pulley).

The alternator belt has to be of the "notched" type to accommodate the smaller diameter of the alternator pulley.

many thanks Hamish, it's very nearly the same as my friends except his uses a long Caphead screw in the place of a timing cover screw. My friend has made this one for me so now i am confident it should work.

I hope this helps other Essex V6 fans

Hi Alan,

Your/your friends arrangement looks simpler and more elegant.
Did you use the original size fan belt?
I had to use a shorter one.

It uses fan belt CONTITECH AVX 10 X 1290 La made in Germany.
I don't know if it's the same length as the standard original fan belt.
I will compare the length when i fit the kit to the car. It's a bit cold to work on the car at the moment.
