Just pulled a failed unit out the front of my 2500m.

Any ideas where I can get a new one or if there are any simple upgrades ?

Lucas SB7014 is the part number with a three pin connector.

Cheers in advance

You can get H4 upgrades for sealed beams - loads available on eBay. I stuck a set in my Trabi recently, having previously bought a kit to replace the sealed beams in my 124 Spider.

if you don't trust ebay then try the likes of Minispares or Minisport - they supply 7" round headlights to the rally fraternity.

I prefer to put 7" units that you can fit Bulbs to and so choose what Wattage.
If you buy 7"" for a Mini check to see if they have Sidelight Bulb or not.

Hi Alan, yeah it looks to be a simple upgrade. Do I even need the sidelight bulb for an M series?

I got a set of H4 conversion ones for my MX5 from our local motor factor. They are standard 7 inch ones, meant as an upgrade for an original mini or a series landrover but I think they are pretty universal. About £30 for the two including the H4 bulbs. Pity most modern cars aren't so simple.

Got an old MX5 conversion set of H4s in the garage. Without sidelight, don't want to get involved in posting 'em but if I can find em they are yours if you collect from Chatham, Kent.

There is nothing overly complex. The 7" round sealed beam is a pretty common light, the world over. But especially on old British cars and was the standard unit on many a Land Rover, including recently.

The 3 pin plug is a standard H4 connector.

There must be millions of halogen housings available for a wide range of prices. But at the end of the day, none are rocket science. Just a reflector and a lens.

More traditional looking units will have the lens/glass angling the beam. While some newer designs have a clear glass and the reflector is angled.

Some will have pilot/side/halo lights, some don't. Depends what you need. But either way, I really wouldn't stress about it. smile

As for bulbs, stock is 55w/60w H4. But you can run these higher output lights from Osram, Phillips or Halfords, etc. e.g. 50% more light...

Or higher wattage, 80/100, 90/130. But they will suck a lot of current. So on an old car check the wiring and switch are up to the task. As well as the electrical system.

On this note, stock wiring and switches cause resistance and reduce volts to the bulbs and output. A relay system directly to the battery/alternator will generally improve output.

Other options include LED or HID bulbs (although a slightly more grey area legally).

And lastly you can buy complete LED 7" round housings as direct replacements. Some look ultra modern, some traditional.

Before you fit higher power lights check the rating of the switch gear and if you have relays in the system. If you don't have relays there is a risk that you will overload the switches if the lights draw too much current.
