Ok guys, can anyone advise me on whether this car has shift linkage or cables? I presume linkage with bushes based on the feel. In any case, there is a LOT of play in the shift mechanism (feels like stirring a pot of soup, lol). I'm trying to see if I can get my hands on a workshop manual and haven't had time to get the car on a lift yet to inspect things but I'm guessing I'll find perished bushes under there. Any short shift kits available?

Assuming you have the standard 2000E box, then the lever is directly connected to the gearbox.

No need to get underneath it (unless the centre console cover is bolted in place) to check some basics.

If you remove the centre console you will see where the lever fits to the box. The metal cap unscrews. Some times the cap works loose which causes excessive movement, but more likely is wear or damage to the nylon bush which the lever pivots on. If that all seems fine then you'll need to drop the box and get it checked out.

Matt & Pete;

Thanks to you both for that information! The car does have the standard Ford box in it so I'll have a look at the nylon bush, etc..and if necessary, will get the kit ordered from the fellow in the UK.
