Tempted by a 1600M that is for sale, what to look for??
Discussion
Hi,
First post here in the classics section. I have seen a 1600M for sale, no current MOT and has some paintwork issues. Other than the usual things to look at when buying a classic is there anything in particular that I need to look at when inspecting a 1600M.
In addition can anyone give a guide price as to what these models are currently selling for?
Many thanks in advance.
Stuart

Hi All,
I just picked this car up today, I've wanted a classic TVR for years so when this popped up on EBay not too far from where I live I couldn't resist!
The description was a little optimistic to be honest, the car needs a repaint, interior trim is pretty tired and it is running a bit rough.
On the plus side it seems a really genuine and straight car, seems largely original, the chassis has very little rust, in fact the whole underside is remarkably clean. It has loads of history (every mot from 1978!) and lots of spares, many of them new which have never been fitted. And of course it is an 'M' series car so looks beautiful!
It's going to keep me busy getting it into to tip top shape.
Cheers
Tim

Congrats Tim. That's a very genuine looking car - just as I like them. It's also the best looking 'M' with the early bonnet, vents and trim. What's your plan - a major off the road rebuild or a gradual refurb whilst keeping it on the road?
If it were mine I'd enjoy driving it for a year or two and just do some of the easy improvements.
Whatever, good luck and keep us up to date

Thanks for all the encouragement and interest in the car!
Here is a picture of it (my little girl exploring the inside!)
You might notice the haze of smoke... initially I figured that would go after the car was warmed up and had been ran for bit. After all it hasn't been driven for three years, however it seems to be smoking quite badly all the time. The engine in the car apparently only has 4000miles on it and to be fair is clean as a whistle and looks like a recent build. So something is not right, I intend to have a tinker round with things, maybe the PCV. Other than that I might just have got unlucky and it needs to come out. I also have the original engine for the car which matches the number on the docs, but that unit would need a rebuild too.
So my plan had been to get an MOT on the car and at least run it for a few months to enjoy it and understand the condition of everything. It looks like the engine if not easily sorted will push me straight into a full rebuild.
To be honest despite it looking lovely from a few feet away, pretty well every element of the car is tired (it is 44yrs old so understandable) so it would really benefit from a chassis up restoration.
I'm not rushing into anything at the minute just doing as much research as possible into how they are put together and mulling it over.
