I know someone with a 3000M and the mechanical fan bearing in the middle of front of Engine needs replacing.
Burton don't stock them. Is it the same as the water pump bearing for a Ford Twin Cam (Lotus Elan ex Anglia 105E) ???
I understand the bore where the bearing is pressed in is a through hole with a core plug to blank off inside engine. But someone told me he has one with a blind hole which makes it difficult to remove.
Is there an accepted mod to replace bearing with an external jockey wheel.
So i wonder what have our experts got to say.

Then I guess removal would be the same as a spigot bearing?

Unless it's an upright radiator 3000M, the fan is better in the bin. Useless.

Are you talking about a thermo viscous fan?
If you really want to remove it then Blind bearing removal tool kit is available from machine mart.

But John is right. Throw it in the bin and first an electric fan.

Someone i know had a problem with the mechanical fan bearings and has removed the fan and pulley. He has fitted an idler/jockey wheel using one of the front timing cover screws. It seems to work well and can easily be replaced in a few minutes if needed. Without the hassle of removing the front timing cover to press out old bearing and pressing in new.

So conclusion,
the mechanical fan needs to be binned o.k. i agree.
But after is it possible to fit a shorter Fan Belt to go direct from the Alternater to the Crankshaft Pulley. Does the front alloy Engine casting need to be modified to stop Fan Belt touching. Or do you need to fit an Idler/Jockey Wheel as in the photo i posted to stop Fan Belt touching.
I imagine one of you boys has done a mod like this.
Any photos available
thanks in advance

You should'nt need the idler as there are front covers around from v6 Zodiacs/Zephyr etc which had the fan mounted on the crank, the idler boss was unmachined.

I suggest you try an alternator mk4 Zephyr/Zodiac/se5 Scimitar belt. A Scimitar owning friend has some early covers, if you wish to go down that route then please pm me although according to this picture the belt should clear the old flange just not so tidy.
