At the moment i have an automatic chokerolleyes on my 3000S but i have bought a manual choke kit to fit.
So what does everyone think, is it a good idea or not. I have doubts if the Autochoke on my car operates correctly. With the Autochoke what is the correct starting procedure from cold, words of wisdom needed please
thanks

Hi Alan I have auto Choke on mine and no issues starts first time usually if the battery is up to strength I just put my foot on the accelerator half way down and turn the key no priming like on the Vixen.
I have to keep a little throttle on for a min or two as she warms up and off she goes occasionally you may find the auto choke stays on and then she idles to high however just a blip of the throttle and it closes it and back to normal

Take the air filter off and check the flaps are closed on cold, get the engine hot and check they are open. Its a simple operation but the coil function can sometimes fail or slip off the little nib that operates the choke spindle.
Chances are the choke flaps have got caught on the throttle body so aren't fully closing. Its a good system when its working.

To operate the auto choke you have to press the accelerator to the floor and then take you footoff of it before trying to start it. Pushing it all the way to the floor sets the choke and sets the fast idle correctly. The proceedure is described in the handbook. If it does not work correctly then clean and lightly lubricate the mechanism. I overhauled mine about 10yrs ago and it has worked perfectly ever since.

I remember a *LOT* of drivers didn't realise that the auto mechanism needed the driver to push the pedal to engage it, on quite a few Fords of the day. Don't feel too bad about it ! Plus they had a reputation for gumming up, not releasing correctly, etc. so got a bad rap for not working, when in fact a bit of maintenance and knowledge was the real issue...

Then Ford made it worse with carbs like the Variable Venturi disaster on the Escorts, and so the legend was strengthened...

Having said all that - I put manual chokes on my Scimitar 3.0 and 2.8 Carb engines, so I was in control. I reckon you tend to drop the choke faster than the auto system does.
