Hi Tivvers!

I have a Tuscan and I am looking to add a classic car to my garage. The older TVRs like Vixen, M series and Taimars seem pretty rare now. The values also seem all over the place? I have seen a 1600M advertised which needs some TLC including a respray. How much is a good condition one of these worth and how many are still left? It would be nice to save an older TVR. Is there a register or something that shows how many are left? On the howmanyleft web site it doesn't separate out the different TVR models pre 1980s S series cars, just lumps them together under 'other' so no way of telling which are which?

Here's the Vixen register, probably gives you some idea of where cars are situated worldwide and the condition they're in.

As far as values go, haven't really got a clue these days. laugh

thanks Vixen. Nothing on 1600Ms? Are these cars very rare now? Can find hardly anything about them.

They'll certainly be rare as they were rare when new. If I recall correctly they only ever made about 170.

My first TVR was a 1976 model (my only car) for 6 years in the 1980's and loved it. Metallic blue with a silver model band. They were good days. I toured around Europe in it for 4 weeks one year. I think we covered 3,000 miles and it never missed a beat. Had a TVR ever since, although I wish I still had the 1600M.

Hi Stu
Do some research look at auction prices cars sold recently and cars for sale that haven't sold and that will give you some idea
Vixens I know that have sold in the last year range from 10k to over 20k Tuscans the same although generally higher
M series from 6k to late teens
Originality tends to command a premium however the quality restorations also make a difference OE or modified avoid anything that looks like its been held together with silicone and self tappers.

They made exactly 149.
49 from 1972 to 1973 and 100 more from 1975 to 1977

Can recommend that car!lick

An M-Register would be welcome!

If you research Stu it's all there regarding values. Given the age of the cars now condition is all and a bad restoration can be worth less than unrestored original. It's all about minimums and maximums and they are around 10 and 25k for each end of the condition scale. 5 years ago that was 6 to 12K. The trouble will be finding a Vixen or 1600 to start with, then judging what the cost would be to get it to the standard of a recent sale but not be too fussy as the car can be improved as you go.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reminder Frank.
She's still on the market. I'm surprised it's not already sold. The person who came to see it had the choice my 1600M or a 3000M and he went for the V6 3000M.
For more info contact me <alan.barker@orange.fr> I live in Brittany near the Ferry St Malo
I have too many toys

I think this sums it up really well. I would add that many private sellers see their car as a better example than it really is, so you will see Vixens in say the £20k plus bracket which should realistically be much less. This is because we (me included probably) tend to see the best in our cars and ignore the less impressive bits.

Also traders will look to buy a car for as little as possible by highlighting all the faults then market it for as much as possible telling buyers it just needs some minor things sorting, but not sort them first because they know how much it costs and the work involved. Buyer beware!

Properly and fully restored cars are a bargain at £20-25k as it will cost much more than this to buy a restore one. However a well selected roadworthy example with solid chassis & good mechanics can provide superb value at say £12k ish giving many years of great enjoyment without major costs. Tatty paint won't affect using it and doesn't rust but it does keep the price down.

A 1978 3000M advertised on PH at the NEC auction last weekend went for £12k plus. I was interested as to reaction to the white & brown colour scheme- exactly the same as my own & not to everyone's taste but seemed not to put buyers off.

It looked good/ well restored in the pics although all TVR ads on PH seem to have a malfunction at present as when you click on a car the page goes blank (has been like this all week and try tho' might cannot find anywhere on the is site to report such an error)

There is one fact which as far as I can see has always been true about Classic TVRs, and probably other makes as well. That is the costs incurred buying and restoring them is always more that what they will fetch when sold.

I have always preferred to buy a complete car needing restoration and doing the work myself, but even without labour costs I have yet to sell a car for more than it cost. Anyway I have never bought one intending to sell it!

The last car I bought was a 1972 1600M which had been stood in a damp garage for 23 years. It was cheap, but it had a seized 1600 Pinto & box in it, I wouldn't say fitted as there was no way I could see it had ever actually run. All the desirable early bits, seats, interior, bumpers etc had been removed and updated with later versions, including a glass sunroof. It had been resprayed just before it was left in the garage and all of the paint was microblistered. I'm sure that at one stage it used to be someone's pride & joy, but was far from original, and definitely not running.

It was bought to build as a Hillclimb & Sprint car, I had given up on finding a suitably priced Vixen. In fact I'm really rather pleased that it is an M, which makes it stand out from the various Vixens, but it is heavier, even than the S4 Vixens which uses the M chassis.

That's a nice looking car Steve. I loved my old 1600M and as an early model yours is that little bit prettier. Looks good in white - is it stripped out or have you got it in road trim?

Hi Steve,

Thanks. Mine's 2445FM Nov 72. The first TVR I had was 2247TM the 8th built, I converted it from 2500M to a V8M.

I always liked the details on the early ones, the bonnet & wing vents, Vixen style dash, Mk2 Cortina back lights etc, so I was pleased to find this one.

It runs in a road going class & is Taxed MOT'd & insured, the interior has no carpets or headlining, but still has the door panels.

Here's a few more before & after pics.
