Need some advice befor I take this job. Is there an upgraded unit for th Essex engine.

I am suffering from excessive heat and I think the exhausts ar frying the starter motor.

Any help would be great and I presume it's a manifold off job

Yes it is a manifold off job to replace the starter motor and depending on which starter motor you have you may need to remove the engine mount on that side and lift the engine a touch. It can be dropped out from underneath but a very fiddly job getting it back in.
The later one has the solenoid fixed to the starter and the early one with the solenoid located on the bulkhead? The later being the easiest to fit but the former being the better starter motor.

on my 3000S i do as follows:
1. remove heater box and rest on top of engine (heater hoses are long enough).
2. remove manifold
3. remove starter from above (replace screws with socket head allen screws).
When reassembling wrap cables with heat insulation to keep cool as possible.
