Hi everyone

I'm trying to remove the knob from the instrument lighting rheostat on my 3000S, but it's not going to come without fight.

Can anyone tell me please whether it is just a push fit onto the spindle or whether it screws on (or indeed something else)?

Opinion so far is that is a push fit, but I would prefer to have a definitive answer if possible before applying too much force!

Thanks

Cliff

you're Lucky it's still attached. On 3000S the knob is just resting in a hole with nothing behind, it's just for showrolleyes

If it's a [real] BL/Triumph one (probably Lucas) many types have a pin hidden behind the knob, push pin in with small screwdriver to be able to pull knob off. You will just see a small hole...

Can be very frustrating if you don't know as it's only a small hole and not at all obvious.

Thanks RCK

I've found the hole! Off to work now, so will give it a poke this evening.

Yep, that's exactly what I was hoping. There are a lot of similar Lucas types, I think that's a Triumph one...

big question, does it work. I need to find the rheostat on my car and it's disappeared somewhere under the tunnel. I hope i can find it as it looks like a nice little gadget to play with

I can't talk from personal experience (I'll need to get a working dashboard first!), but on the bench at least, my rheostat seems shot (zero ohms at 100% output, infinite ohms everywhere else).

From what I've been told though, this is not uncommon and hence the most reliable solution can be to bypass the rheostat altogether.

I'm not sure how bright the instrument lights are at full brightness cool?

Same thing happened to mine and since I couldn't find a replacement for less than £70 I decided to take it apart to see if it could be salvaged.

There's 2 circuit boards sandwiching the contact levers. The circular board is attached to the spindle and rotates, the other one forms the back of the rheostat. You can see that the centre track of the circular board has been partly burned away probably due to a bulb failing. Not too difficult to repair if you know the ropes but, if you don't, then bright panel lamps are not the end of the world. . .

Rimmer Bros seem to sell some Triumph Rhéostats good price. I Wonder if the Rheostat can get hot in operation and be a risk like Ballast résistors
