Steering rack on a 3000M/S/Taimar is a Triumph 2000, so chances are, the same on a 1600M..............column is Spitfire

Frank........is the Triumph 2000 rack the same as that for the Triumph 2500? The TVR Master Spare Parts Document lists it as the latter for 1600, 2500 and 3000. scratchchin

Hello Alain,

I need a quick rack for mine M3000. If you need a standard LHD rack then you can send me a message.

At least the racks for Triumph 2000/2500 and 2.5PI list with Rimmers as the same, so yes, they probably are (not sure tho !)

Jan-Erik; Alan' 1600M is a RHD, but I might know someone whom can use a LHD rack, I'll shoot him a mail so he can contact you ?

A 1600M steering rack is the same as all M series, a non-power steer Triumph 2000 mk2 saloon, the column again as with most M's is TR6 top end with the centre section between the 2 UJs a modified Spitfire shaft, an extra set of splines cut on the end instead of a fixed UJ. These splines are prone to wear due to insufficient heat treatment causing the UJ to come loose with alarming results when the steering slips!

I am getting old and my memory is beginning to fail but I'm sure somewhere along the line I remember some one saying that although it's a T2000 rack the track rods were shorter???

That is correct for the early cars with the vertical split cowl and low ignition barrel, later cars with the horizontal split cowl are Spitfire IV - 1500

As for the steering arm, I too do remember having read somewhere they are shorter, tho the parts list says they are T2000 ?

It's a complete rack with track rods not the shorter track rods off a TR6. I have fitted one in the past bought as a 2000 exchange rack with no problem. I suspect the TR6 and 2000 saloon rack has the same body with different track rods and ends though have never been able to confirm this.

Ahhh..... I knew there was a twist somewhere. I guess TR6 items are far easier to get so the message I failed to remember correctly was "It's a TR6 rack but with different rods"

The best place for recon racks is with someone who used to post here, cheaper than most Triumph specialists and comes with trackrod ends too! Based in Coventry I believe;)
