Engine swap in 3000M
Discussion
I know I know - it has been debated in several posts. I think now, that I have more or less been through them all.. But maybe not. I read in one post, that a 2 litre Zetec is more or less a bolt in. And - as I have read, it has been done several times. But I have NOT found any threads or forum posts taking me through this type of project. So anyone on here with some build sheets/how to's and preferable some pics?
Thanks for any help, Morten

Morten, jaguar V6 is more or less a straight fit :-)
BTW, I'm working on a 3x ducati 848 throtle body setup with 12 injectors, 6 of them mounted shower style.
Else would a BMW 2.0 M3 4 cyl be an attractive option, but 170 hp is max if you want goverment applause.

And a 6 cilinder BMW from Z3 or Z4?
Sounds good and got over 200 hp.
But what to do with all those electrics and computers???

Sounds good Mads - how many HP are you for with the new setup?BTW, I'm working on a 3x ducati 848 throtle body setup with 12 injectors, 6 of them mounted shower style.

But you are right - 170 HP is what I am aiming for = Zetec 2,0 Black top with webers seems to fit that bill. And it will be the smallest bill as well... At least much smaller than a M3 engine. And with a substantial weight loss as well, compared to the current Essex V6.... I am aiming for a power upgrade, though everything (including a Chimaera) feels SO SLOW after the Caterham. But most important is driveability and reliability!

I wouldn't bother with Webers..either go the whole hog and fit throttle bodies and engine management of go half way and stick one of these kits on….But you are right - 170 HP is what I am aiming for = Zetec 2,0 Black top with webers seems to fit that bill. Hi Morten
I'm at est 300 hp right now. The new ITB setup will perhaps add 20-30 hp letting more air in at 8000-9000 rpm. But most important target is to get better throttle control. Right now do it have a slight lag, equal too much throttle at cornet exit's. And don't tell my wife, but a new set of pistons and H beam rods could be on the to do list, 9500 rpm's would be so much fun :-)
If you fit a zetec, then keep the injectors, I can help you with a VEMS ECU that are 600-800£ including new sensors. Gearbox is quite an topic with the zetec's. T5 beeing the better option, but expensive. MT75 og T9 is cheaper.

Dollyman1850 - can you let me know from where you sourced the engine mounts ? And who did your exhaust manifold?
Looks like you are running the NODIZ system on you car! Does it sound enough of 'old' car?
When It fires and runs after wiring I will let you know…Looks like you are running the NODIZ system on you car! Does it sound enough of 'old' car?

Engine mounts for Zetec to Escort are from retro Ford (Dave Colledge) in Corby. Being that Crossflow in escort is same as crossflow in Vixen I took a punt and they fitted perfectly.
Gearbox mount is Rally design and new chassis brackets made.
Exhaust was AAS in Newcastle.
Diff can be left std or modified..mild to wild….
I expect the finished car will sound and go like this…

gearbox wise if you are spending so much on a 300bhp engine then I'd go T9 with a quaife/tranX or similar gear kit at the very least. Or elite sequential unfortunately they are noisy but then so is a TVR
there is a large choice of boxes in the motorsport world.
Just depends on how much you wish to spend

When your Zetec Vixen is on the road it's going to be really interesting as to which you find more fun/enjoyable to drive - V8 or 4 pot ! What do you reckon?
Watching the vid, I think you may have more fun driving the Zetec as you can have a real blast without killing yourself.
Can't wait to find out...

Sounds really great with the TB'ed Zetec in that Cortina! It might even be a cheaper solution than the webers??Engine mounts for Zetec to Escort are from retro Ford (Dave Colledge) in Corby. Being that Crossflow in escort is same as crossflow in Vixen I took a punt and they fitted perfectly.

Still - I was thinking that the webers ad more character and are a little more period correct fitment...
Mads - I already have a Type 9 gearbox from a XR4i in the shed and I also have the BMW rack still here, som actually I thought building the car with an engine like this + webers and my gearbox + a servoed BMW rack would not be way too difficult??!!

Might not be the case - and I would sertainly still need a lot of guidance..

When you see new crate Zetecs available at that money It really does make a mockery of trying to stick with the old Crossflow, then spending thousands to get 135hp :-)Still - I was thinking that the webers ad more character and are a little more period correct fitment...

A set of webers is expensive when you add everything up unless you have some ready to use..Personally I would go for a Weber alpha / Jenvey set up for not much more..
The bike carbs work well though and at £750 all in make a cheap install which is almost as good They also give good road manners and fuel consumption when you aren't caning it!!
If I was going to do another I would also be looking for an early ST170 engine,,,,,These are now very affordable and with the Nodiz get you up to 205hp!! More than enough in a little vixen…
Then again….
