Is the Griffith V8 engine based on the Ford 289 that was used in the Mustang?
Loosely based or completely different? Alot of the Mustangs I believe had auto boxes. What was the manual box model?

Also inlets and carbs, were they Holley downdrafts?

Thanks

Griff V8 is Rover engine, not Ford. Originally Buick, (hence the 'B' in Rover P5B) of 215 cu in displacement.

Not that Griffith! Yes it was the 289 Mustang unit, either the standard unit or the Hi-Po unit. Geoff

The proper Griffith used a 289 cu in V8 engine!

It was available in standard form with a 2 barrel carb and also Hi-Po version with 4 barrel carb, better intake manifold and solid lifter cam.

The gearbox originally used was a Borg warner T10, Later cars had Super T10's and in some circumstances the Toploader box was also used.

Early Griffs retained the MGB (banjo) diff in its own casing, later cars utilised the 3.07 ratio 4HU differential

There are many many many derivatives and spec differences in the 289 engine and manny many interchangeable options

Sorry Peter. Should have mentioned it was the 60's Griff not the 90's on. Although the later cars are classics.....

It is a Ford 289 as used in the 'ordinary' Mustang in either std or HiPo form - not the 302 used in the GT350 Mustang.

Mine was on a Holley but the FIA race cars use downdraught Webers

I just happen to know where there is a fully rebuilt 1965 289 HiPo for sale on +20.thou bores so plenty of life still in it. New Holley, all ancillaries, alloy bellhousing and rebuilt T10. Not a race engine, built as improved road engine.
