hi everyone,
i bought my 1975 1600M reg KNR 855P last year and it was a project to finish it's rebirth. Now it drives and is fantastic. I wonder if anyone on the forum knows of the past history of my car. It was featured on the front page of BROOKLANDS BOOKS in the past and the last owner before me was Peter Hatcher who i understand raced Triumph Spitfires.
I would very much apreciate any info as it would the complete the car's history

many thanks Alan

hi Graham,
my 1600M is yellow and when i bought the car it had not been on the road for 20 Years.
Is your 1600M the Silver Grey one that was sold recently. I think there was about 6 TVR 1600M's registered at the same time through John Britten TVR dealers

hi Graham,
that's good news. Mine has always been Yellow and at first had a black vinyl roof. There was no headling inside so i got a specialist to fit a new one in Black and it looks fantastic.
Maybe some of the other 1600M registered at the same time still exist
best regards Alan

Its quite a nice little car, had a body off resto in the mid 90's which seems to have stood the test of time. The handling seems spot on, looks like a lot of time was spent on the setup. got a nicely built motor running through a pair of sidedrafts..

needs a little bit of cosmetic tidying, the mid 80's paint job has faded, and the interior is complete, just needs a bit of a clean up . the worst bit is the window rubbers have perished a bit so leak a bit. they will get sorted with the respray.

The old chap is hoping to make the TVR CC meet at burghley and maybe le mans classic too..

hi Graham,
i bought new rubbers to fit the original back window and new windscreen from David Gerald. The way to fit the glass is difficult and not the usual way with a thick string. You need to fit the rubber first to the appeture in the body and then with the glass pressed from outside you ease the rubber over the edge of the glass. Only a job for the brave.
My 1600m is now bored to 1700 and twin 40 dcoe carbs with piper 285 cam.
I live in France Brittany and there are quite a few other classic TVRS in the region

Looks very nice, I feel a 1760 motor will be destined for the engine bay of ours before long... used to run them in kit cars years ago... I'd like to stick it on Throttle bodies and fuel injection if he'll let me get a way with it..

I Expect it will be seen across the channel before long the folks have a place in normandy, I even have a wedge in a barn over there awaiting restoration

Hi Graham

I have seen an advert for this car which is I assume an old avert? Guy called Noah was selling it? Have you still got the car? I fancied buying it to do up.

maybe more than 80% of M's had sunroofs, Webasto, Weathershield or Glass.
On my Yellow 1600M it was fitted maybe 25 years ago

yes a typical bodge of the 80ies / 90ies "we will fit you a sunroof while you are shoppinjg at Tesco´s"....cause the british summers are so hot and it never rains in UK.

a few years later those cheapish sunroofs started to leak, spare-parts non available...they look ugly vomit they destroy the shape / appearance of the car´s roofline....
now those cars became more valueable / collectable....undoing those 90ies mistakes costs good money...and the value of a sunroof, against a non-sunroof car, is clearly recognizeable.

Have to disagree as cannot understand anyone buying a relatively cramped two seater sportscar from the 70s without a sunroof- glass or fabric as both around in that period. Have even had new glass webastos retro fitted into my last two family saloons as modern cars rarely come with them now as it suits the manufacturers more than purchasers.

Last year on one of those classic restoration progs the guys took a perfectly functioning full length webasto out of an Mgbgt & replaced it with a closed metal roof. Bonkers, and they were roundly slated by owners. (Rightly so in my view)

In the case of my TVR3000M the heat & extra safety of the vinyl wind back roof big benefits ie you can keep cool & more importantly you can climb out in a spin which indeed I did off the M42 last year when wedged in by an amazon truck somewhat with fortunately minimal damage to me & motor.

On a summers day 3 litre essex humming and rays on my (admittedly bald) head....marvelous !

I know in the summer with the roof up on my 3000s it gets very hot in the cabin but i can put the ragtop down to cool off.
In my 1600M when it gets hot i open the sunroof and Windows, with the very big bay window at the back it gets very hot in the cabin.
GinG15 (i imagine Ginetta) i Wonder what TVR you have please and how you keep the cabin cool in the summer

Are the canvass sunroofs that most of the M-series sport, not available as an entire kit, frame, canvas and latch mechanism anymore, or would one have to salvage an entire unit from a wreck? They look much nicer and more original than the glass pop up units.

There was a stock of them in Canada where they bought a number of them from the Factory many years ago NOS if they have any left I am not sure however not the frames themselves.

Adrian Venn does a very good job at refurbishing them he did our Taimar one in 2014 so that is an option.

If someone has none and wanted to fit there are a number of very good companies out there doing period type roofs that they could have fitted and would look good rather than the horrid Glass pop up things like I fitted to my Mini 35 years ago in an hour LOL horrid things

I agree the Webasto or Weathershield look much better then glass.
When i bought my 1600m it already had the glass sunroof and i have learned to live with this 70's mod. Maybe i should have filled the hole and then got someone to stick on a new vinyl roof to return to factory spec.

Yes I would agree the vinyl sunroofs are better. Webasto still exist they have a webpage just put 'webasto sunroofs' into google. Should add that the glass ones these days wind back over the rear of the actual car roof so you do get opening hatch so to speak. Have had two fitted to two PT Cruisers in last twelve years have been driving them no leaks at all ! They cost about £325 inc fitting. I think they still make on request vinyl slide back ones albeit quite a bit more cost wise.

TVR did not use Webasto. They also didn't have canvas sunroofs. The sliding vinyl roofs fitted to Ms were sourced from Birmingham Weathershields.

Best regards,
Bernard.
