Taimar rear diff.
Discussion
cleaning up the rear diff today, and need to get a new oil seal for the front flange, pinion seal?
searching old threads this appears to be a Salisbury diff, 4HU, but cannot see any info regards to what ratio it might be, just out of interest, there is a tab on one of the rear cover bolts stamped 43 over 13, not sure of its relevance.
a quick look on the bay comes up with lots of Landrover options, so assume this diff used in all sorts of cars, but need to make sure of right type to get the seals, the front seal is stamped 18891, C/R USA.
anyone shed some light on this?

It originally came from Jaguar.43 over 13 is the ratio; divide 43 by 13 and you get 3.307 which is the standard ratio TVR used. I've driven a converted 5-litre which had a 2.89 ratio and it appeared to be very sluggish.
edited to make sense - it is a Sunday, after all

Original V8 pre-m TVR's used 3.07, other ratios available are 3.31, 3.54 (3.0 M series) and 2.88..slow and sluggish
3.54's seem to give best all round results for 5sp cars they are also hardest to find in good used lsd since all the cobra boys also want them.
Are you just installing a std diff ?
Other ratios are available from specialists
Jag breakers are your best source of units fitted to daimler hearse and limos. pre 1979 XJ6, Pre-79 XJS, also all earlier IRS Jags.
If you are not good at arithmetic then put a tipp ex mark on an output shaft stud and rotate it through 360 degrees then count how many times the main pinion shaft turns.

it had a v8 in it , I'd assumed in a v6 car ,but maybe original v8 Tuscan,it was a sort of maroon colour with lots and lots of little holes on the front of the bonnet .all V8's were 3.07 originally

According to the Motor - July 1969, the Tuscan V6 had a 3.31 although I think the ratio may have changed at some point during its short production run.all V8's were 3.07 originally
M's later had 3.54's fitted originally TR6 diffs

I think The TR6 diff was a 3.45 as standard. The 3000M the Autocar tested in November '74 is listed as a 3.45.
I'd love to identify the ratio on my 2500. Do I need to compare the number prop shaft turns with a drive shaft rotation?
Chris
I agree that the tuscan V6 had a 3.31 diff and believe that lsd was not an option. I have just removed a 3.31 from my car and am replacing it with a lsd 3.54 and 5 speed T9 box.........possibly more user friendly depending on the purpose.
If anybody is in need of a 3.31 diff please make contact.

I thought Tuscan was 3.54?? With an LSD option. You've got me thinking now I'll have to check.
Fitting a LSD form a random jag is a risky business as the TVR is lighter and the first time you realise the ramp angles aren't right is when you're going sideways.
my 3.54 lsd came from a chap with a v8 tuscan ,whether it was a v6 converted i don't know , it was a maroon car .with a multitude of little inch sized round holes in the front for air flow .Fitting a LSD form a random jag is a risky business as the TVR is lighter and the first time you realise the ramp angles aren't right is when you're going sideways.
there is a little drag when moving one wheel by hand with it jacked up ,so i would say its a loose one .it definitely works though.

It was a V6 converted, with Tuscan Cobra emblazoned down the side. It was about at some of the Berkshire meetings late 80's early 90's. The owner (whose name I can't remember) competed in quite successfully in Sprints and Hill climbs, and held a class record at Ragley Hall.
Nick Beagley was the owner when this was taken at Blackpool in April 1990.
