Hi Guy's,
we have a problem with the coil, it is getting very hot (can't touch it) and it is discharging liquid from the top. It is marked as a 12v coil and there does not appear to be a ballst resistor unless it is behind the dashboard. Where would the resistor normally be? and would the coil be 9v if it had one.
The voltage at the positive terminal with ignition on is 10v but we have put the battery on charge to make sure it is fully charged. If there was a ballast resistor then should the voltage be limited to 9 so is the 10v telling us there is no resistor?
I am thinking of getting a Bosch blue high performance coil from Burton Power if it is a non ballast system. Your thoughts appreciated.

have you got an M-series wiring diagram? It clearly shows where the ballast resistor should go. Not sure what the red torpedo-shaped thing is, but all the ballast resistors I've seen have been a small whire ceramic block with a coiled wire set in it.
If you want a pic and/or a wiring diagram, email me.

You need to know if the ignition system uses a ballast resistor, if when you've charged the battery to 12v and it holds and the ignition system is running at 10v (A little high but should be OK)like you said then you probably have a ballast resistor in series. If the coil is getting too hot and ejecting oil then it is possible that either the primary or secondary windings have failed, grounded or fused some how. Get hold of new low voltage coil and install. check contact breaker points are breaking and HT leads are on the right cylinders, for what it costs install a new capacitor (condensor) at the distributor to ensure a good spark! Oh yes check plug gap (Stanley blade thicknes as mr Venn puts it!) When you are happy crank her over, if she starts great but if you are still having probs make sure you turn ignition off while sorting as this will heat up the coil for sure!
Best of luck,
Glyn.
