Hi All

I have ordered a pinion and diff seal, but it appears that the pinion seal I have is 78mm and the one sent is 74mm.

Can anyone confirm what model diff seal I need?

Thanks

Stu

P.S, I know its imperial, but its been a long night!

If it looks like this:

It's from a Jaguar XJ6 and is a type 4HU. This is not the limited slip variety (LokStop) but was the original fit on my 1979 3000S.

It will be either 15386 or 15397, what have you already got?

It looks similar to the one on the left, the only markings on it is EP 8 and its 78mm od.

Have you got one?

Speak to Ray Ingman at Classic spares 0992 716236 on Tuesday, he'll be able to help. He does Jaguars but I'm sure he'll know which seal you need from a description of what you have.
Looking at the one I have I'm also pretty sure it's the same seal as fitted to the Land Rovers that use the Salisbury axles.
Just looked at a parts list and they seem to be either 39mm or 46mm (later model) inner diameter.

The other benefit of speaking to specialists is that they will also tell you to check that it is actually the seal gone...4HU's are known for oil to migrate up the pinion thread so when you change them you also allow for that possibilty too!

Ring Adrian or Steve.

on salisbury diffs two types of pinion seals are possible. both share the same outer diameter of 80.3 mm, but pinion seal inner holes differ. early ones are 39.8 mm ( 1 9/16" ) and the later ones are 47.6 mm ( 1 7/8").
the old stock seals have leather sealing flaps, whereas the aftermarket "modern" ones are in synthetic rubber.

with worn seal surfaces you can use speedy sleeves to conceal the worn area when fitting new seals so it will seal again properly. should the pinion flange be damaged beyond repair new flanges are available ( from me for instance). these replacements all have the larger diameter to match the later seal diameter.

hope this is of help. cheers, geert
