Can anyone on group e-mail me some high resolution images of the dashboard text under the switches and wiper/lights switch panel on a Vixen. Looking to get a replacement made up. Low-res example below to help explain what I'm after.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Steve,

Not sure whether this will be good enough. If you send me an email with your ID I can then send you a 1 mb attachment.

Probably the best original period photo of original switch panel is in TVR Vixen/ Phillips radio brochure but I,m not sure its any better than your own photo

Where do I find this brochure of which you speak?

Thanks

The S1 is a standard engineered satin black engraved formica (as IMHO the first picture is), as a kid this was the standard labeling system in engineering workshops (later cars are a chrome almost a tape chrome with black lettering).

Do a search on engraving formica...

FROM MY UNDERSTANDING THE ORRIBLE STICK ON SILVER LABEL STARTED WHEN GEARBOX'S ADOPTED REVERSING SWITCHES.
KENT ENGINE VIXENS HAD A SWITCH ON DASH TO PUT REV LIGHTS ON (& a warning light)
THOSE HEAVY 2500 THINGS HAD A REV SWITCH ON BOX, SO THEY PUT HAZARD SWITCH IN WHAT WAS REV LIGHT 'HOLE'
AS FACTORY DID NOT WANT TO THROW AWAY EXIST STOCK OF SWITCH PLATES, THE PUT STICK ON LABEL ON TOP.
SWITCH PLATES WERE BLACK ANODISED ALUMINIUM. THIS GOES NEARER BROWN AFTER 40 ODD YEARS.
AN S2 I AM DOING AT MO HAD EXTRA HOLES IN IT, SO I SORTED REPLACEMENTS, PICS BELOW :-

Hi Ian,
I had not thought it through as a piece anodized alloy ...but this is certainly the same engraved effect that I thought was formica...yours look very tasty.
Adrian@
Ian...a thought here, are the letters then in-filled with white paint?

Interesting to the see the standardisation of warning light colours! I have blue: high beam, green: indicators, yellow: reversing light.

Also, the use of a Rev light switch on my car (T V6 with overdrive 'box) as the overdrive inhibitor switch also has connections to automate rev light selection (wish I'd realised when I re-wired the damn thing!)

Oh, I've also got an ignition light: red

One of the things that I look for in an original car is that the yellow being set as indicator,(I have always set the green as indicator) but I have seen so many set like that I have come to assume that these were set at the factory like this.

An awards shop will sell you the black alloy flat stock. Cut out the holes, shape and take back to the same shop and they will cut the writing into the alloy...job done.
Cheers,
D.

I actually had an M plate engraved by a local company. The actual engraving was done on a computer based set-up for £15.75, but I had to pay £25 set up charges, for 1st one. I can sort you a copy if you wish !
Give me a ring on 07973 666264 & I will tell you full tale !!
Regards Ian !

As a serial lurker on here, I do not normally post. However, I am intrigued by the comments above as I went through this exercise 20 years ago on my S2.

I took my old switch panel to the local commercial engraver (no longer in business) and in 24 hours and £29 lighter, I was in possesion of a perfect copy.

The point of this is that my original and the copy have white letters and do not show the aluminium base. I have a memory (that is sometimes difficult with progressing years) of the engraver saying that to get this the aluminiumm substrate is coated twice; initially white and then over coated with black. The blsck is engraved off to produce the white letters.

So I think I am suggesting that if you want to go to the FEOAF (that is South Yorkshire text speak for the "Far end of a F*rt") on originality the letters should be white, for an early'ish S2 and probabley an S1. The letters on the Philips picture certainly are white; I have an original copy.

I have the original panel which may be available for loan as a template if that is of interest.

Regards
Steve

Does anyone have advice on getting faded brown switchplates back to black..? Painting would be the obvious way but then you lose the lettering - or is there a way around that?

Cheers

I think these are anodised panels. Painting them would not look right.

I agree. Does anyone know if there is a way to get that anodised finish back to black...?
Cheers
