Collected the 3000M this morning , and now understand the grin factor you people speak about . The car is almost causing accidents in the street with passing drivers 'rubber necking' to have a look ! To say that I am a very proud owner is an understatement .
Anyway first impression great ! The only comment I have is that it is a standard 4 speed gearbox ( healthy ) however at high revs it sounds 'busy' and I feel as if I could change up again.
How much is an exchange 5 speed gearbox and how many hours for a mechanic would this incur ? ( its a job I'll consider for the Winter time )

This can be done using either the 2.8 box from the Capri (watch out for weak 1st gear, the Essex develops more torque than the 2.8 especially in tuned form) or the T5 box (as fitted to Griffth/Chimaera/Serria Cosworth, etc). The T5 is very strong, you should not break it but gear change is not the fastest in the world.

Either way you will need to find the following:-

1) Bellhousing (Ford Consul, or Alloy equivalent). The former is very rare the later is not cheap

2) Gearbox

3) Make up new gearbox rear mount

4) New Propshaft to fit

5) Modify Gear Lever mechanism/Centre Console to fit.

Its not a trivial job, easier if you are doing a complete body off. I stuck with the four-speeder in my Taimar (2 x body off's!!) for 12 years for the following reasons:-

1) Its a lot of hassle
2) I didn't do enough miles to justify the change (approx 30K in 12 years)
3) If you want to sprint/hillclimb the car you will need the original box to stay in a Roadgoing Class

In you position with a recently purchased car, I would drive it for a few months until you are used to it, and knwo what else needs to be looked at. Keep your money in your wallet for the moment.

Hope that helps

"hello Girls"
I sat on my gearbox hoping I'd come to terms with it but never did. Adrian at exactly tvr helped me convert mine to 5 speed, used a capri 2.8i box, his modified bell housing, mounting braket and modified quick shift stick plus other stuff. Best thing I ever did car drives sweet. while travelling to le mans 24H reached 131mph (Quite thrilling) on the gps, never got anywhere close to that with the 4 speed. Total cost around £560. Get saving!

Capri 2.8 box is fine if you don't tune the engine much. First gear is quite weak on it and with a trick engine, you will break it.

Pleased it worked out for you Supaspark

David / Glyn ...
Thanks boys for the advice .
Well its defnitely not a job that I'll be tackling personally !
Going to have a few runs with the car over the Summer and Autumn , that will give me time to see if I get used to the revs . If I can get my local TVR Mechanic to get the job done for about £500/600 its a possibility .
She's going to be tuned further over the Winter but I wont be 'racing' her officially .
I would hate to think of the revs/noise on mine when I get close to and above the 100mph mark with the 4 speed box!!!!!!!
Aye yours
Dram.
PS
Glyn
You have a striking looking car...

The noise is not that bad! I had my car pulling 6000rpm in top (on the back straight at Goodwood on a sprint), reckoned that equated to 120mph given the gearing and my tyres (225/50's on 15" rims). It was a regular visitor to three figures, only the wet was a bit iffy as the roof would rise if the windows were hut with cabin pressure and the rain would come up the screen and down the inside!!!!

I reckon £500-600 quid can be better spent at Exactly TVR on a set of Leda's + Adrians springs and some corner weighting.

Thanks Dram, she is even better in the flesh!
Just sold my 4 speed box's to Nigel Warner for his 3000s. If the type 9 quits I'll put the uprated bearings in which are supposed to be good for 200bhp.
( Box may allready have been modified) I was on the rolling road last week and the cars putting 130bhp down at 5500rpm, so on the bench I rekon about 155bhp so prob got a highlift cam in anyway, gearbox is handling it fine. I may encounter problems when I fit the new engine cos I think it will be around 180bhp! Plenty of type 9's in the scrapper still so not to worry!
