Whilst spending yet another evening last night under my 1972 1600M trying to eleviate fume smells from the cabin, a group of youths walked down my street completely ignored my neighbours brand new BMW M3 and his Jaguar XKR and shouted "nice car mate" to a grinning oil and grime covered proud classic TVR owner - they then proceeded to ask if they "could have a look". My nieghbour who was tending his lawns at the time was visibly jealous.

What findings have you in your fume quest?

My Taimar had this problem, part solved by renewing tailgate seal and adjusting.
Still have the problem though, especially when driving with the windows open.
My exhaust doesn't appear to have any leaks.

Nice When working on mine on the driveway, even though it doesn't necessarily look totally like a car at all sometimes with the amount of stuff piled up on it, it does draw some interesting compliments and gazes from passers by, apart from some time ago, when two kids wondered if it was for 'banger racing'....

The Fume Quest So Far :- After placing a posting some time ago and gaining some great advice ( thanks to all ) I am still working my way down the possibles - started with the cheapest first.

1. Siliconed all the holes in bulkhead.
2. Extended rear pipes ( also stopped staining on rear)
3. Went over exhaust joints with a fine tooth comb and sealed with putty and replaced brackets.
4. Made and installed an extra gear and handbrake gaiter which now seals the gaping hole including ash tray.

Next Steps

1. Just managed to find manifold gaskets so will install at the weekend.
2. Make some carpet strips and place around bonnet levers.

3. BOOK CAR INTO LOCAL GARAGE AND HAND THEM THE PROBLEM.

Any further advice would be gratefully received.
The car isn't running to good at the moment - it is hesitant when I put my foot down and runs on after turning off - also the fume smells are particularly bad when accelerating hard and on overun.

Harry,
How fit is the engine? Its worthwhile taking out the crankcase breather to see what fumes are coming out under running - it sounds like it may even be partially blocked. The fumes may be a result of crankcase overpressure - caused by a broken ring?? Compression test would give an indication.

Daftlad,
I have given up and have just dropped the car off at my local garage this morning he only works on high performance stuff and loves the oldies, had a compression test done on the motor about 2 months ago which showed good results and the fumes were present then, however they have got steadily worse of late, performance is still good once it stops spluttering when I accelerate and there is no sign of any smoking from exhaust. Should find out in the next couple of hours once been on rolling road if its anything to worry my wallet about.
