What is the leagl noise for a pair of exhausts for road use and how and where can i get them measured for loudness. All i have done is removed 3 foot of pipe on each side and moved my silencers further back and now the noise makes me cringe and fear of getting pulled by a boy in blue so all these nice days that we have had i cant use my vehicle on the road till i sort the problem out. I dont want to get new boxes if poss. Ive even put the 3 foot pipes on after the silencers and it is just the same.

For SVA its 101 dB(A) at 3/4 of the engine speed where it develops maximum power. If your car isn't a kit, it would revert to the Construction and Use noise requirements and these are messy. It's unlikely the cops would do you for less than 101 though. Don't know where you'd get it checked. Maybe a local technical college or university would have a noise meter. Failing that, a friendly SVA tester might (for the price of a pint) pop out and do one for you - it only takes a minute.
