Really silly question this, and probably not the best place for it, but anyway...

How the hell are you supposed to put a car on axle stands. I went to do some work on my daily driver (a Mk2 Golf GTi - supposedly to save money to spend on the Libra) and needed to get it up on axle stands.

But, there is just one jacking point on either side at the front, so you use that to jack the car up, but then where do you put the axle stand? I'm assuming you really only want to put it under the jacking point.

Main chassis rails, rear suspension beam. Main structural points basically.

Not sure about Golfs, but some front wheel drive cars have a cradle running fore/aft under the engine. Have used these to jack front ends up and then put axle stands either under suspension arms or by suspension mounting points, which are usually beefy enough to cope.

Thanks John and Graham.

I pretty much thought this was the only option but wondered if I was missing some piece of wisdom.

Oh what a wonderful evening... Oil change, rear wheel bearings and brakes replacement.

I've got a mkIII golf and jack it under the suspension wishbone, then put the axle stand under the jacking point. Jacking under the jacking points takes ages as most of the time is spent lifting the body, while the wheels stay firmly on the floor.

So let me get this right, you're going to service your own vehicle but you're not sure how to get it on axle stands???

Are you sure that's wise

Not all that sure at all, but I've got to learn some how.

But I've bought some walking boots just in case...
