I checked the C&U regs a few years back, and the SVA, but cant find a definite answer - is there a limit to how high the exhaust exits can be? I see GT40s, the Zonda etc, have them about 1.5-2 ft up, and many new bikes have them under the seat, about 3 ft up. Its the only way I can see of shortening the rear overhang on a transverse mid-engined car.

Been looking in my Bosh automotive handbook and cant see anything in there either!
Will have closer look later when i have more time.

There must be some rules and regs on cars with high exhausts or they wouldnt all be flush with the bodywork!!

Some trucks have their exhausts vertical and above the cabin.

Although thinking about it, are they only American trucks?

From page 47 of existing SVA regs

10. No exhaust pipe shall project by more than
10mm beyond the vertical projection of the floor
line lying directly above it, unless it terminates in a
rounded edge having a radius of curvature of no
less than 2.5mm..

In addition the new draft regs state
From Page 154 of new draft regs,
1. An exhaust system
Check the exhaust system is complete, is fitted
with a silencer and is secure to the vehicle.

So lloks like position is unimportant as long as it is radiused

When I had my SVA I asked about how far the exhaust could stick out from the side of my car (Tiger Cat) and was told it didn't matter as long as it has a 2.5mm radius on it. i.e. I could have it sticking out 4 feet to clobber pedestrians and as long as it was radiused it would be SVA ok!!!

No, most Volvos (FM12 and FM7 that I have driven recently) have them behind the cabin, as Do Scanias.

I fact, thinking about it, most rigid trucks have vertical exhausts. Some artics have them, but most exit before the drive axel.

Nothing to stop you doing it (as long as the end is radiused). One of the very few things that hasn't been made illegal yet!
