Car or bike engined? Race or road? Refinement or out and out ferocity? Budget?

All sorts of questions...

I'd suggest you take a look at (in rough descending order of budget):

Caterham (SuperLight R's are pretty tasty)
Westfield
DAX Rush
Fisher Fury (Jeremy Phillips design)
Raw Striker (Jeremy Phillips design)
SSC Stylus (Jeremy Phillips design)
Stuart Taylor Locost / Phoenix (Jeremy Phillips design)
Tiger

There are of course many others, but these were the ones I was looking at. I'm sure others here will have a few more options and opinions.

In theory the simplist answer is a factory built Caterham R500.

But as Lexsport has pointed out there are too many variables to consider for there to be a simple answer.

There's even the possibility of an R600 soon

There is a Dax Rush MC with a Hyabusa engine in knocking out 777 BHP/ton. Top Trump, I win.

Caterham

Have you seen how well they are put together compared to some others?

The chassis is a work of art, and I actually do structural analysis for a living. Most spaceframes are actually easily beaten on terms of stiffness to weight by simple X braced ladder frames. The Caterham is one of a tiny minority of kitcar spaceframes that actually are capable of bettering a ladder frame.

Oh sorry Im thinking cheapish around £5k-7K maybe home built maybe second hand. Used for road but I dont really mind about refinement, just want the biggest thrill. You read about kits not being as good as caterhams for driving thrills but is it all relative? As much as Id like an R500 I cant really stretch to it.

I looked at loads and pesonally reckon the MK is the best of the Locost bunch.

I'm afraid it looks like you may have to go through the horrific task that is visiting a number of kit car manufacturers and taking the cars out for a test drive.

If you really can't face it, I'm sure that I could be convinced to do it for you and report back my findings. I wouldn't charge you too much either.

£5K - £7k eh? Well start with these and go try a few.

Tiger (Cat E1, Super 6, Avon)
Raw (Striker)
Stuart Taylor
Sylva (Mojo)
Luego (Viento)
Dax (Rush)
MK
Tornado (Raptor)
Quantum (Extreme)
Westfield (Used)

Took me about two minutes to come up with that lot just flicking through a copy of Which Kit, or was it the other one ?

None are dogs, all will thrill and your never look at a normal car again to get the same feeling. You need to go try a few. There are some "Used Specialists" that'll have a selection. Or visit each factory in turn and enjoy the research.

I would always go down the build route, I collect my second Tiger kit this Saturday. Buying second hand need not be frightening, just go in with the same caution as any used buy.

Your'll never regret it.

Paul.

bit late jumping in - i'm a newbie here. We built two Westfields and definitely think they were the best. Our first was an SEight with a pinto, second we put an Rover V8 in it. That was great! We've moved on to an Ultima now - once bitten, no hope of turning back!

Lots of people rate Robin Hoods very highly. I think the company is the first to admit they don't sell a '7' replica, but a locost car that happens to look similar to a '7'.

I have heard they are not the easiest to build, needing the builder to make some parts up. (I might be wrong and I'm sure will get corrected if I am)

Of the cars mentioned previous in the £5-7k bracket, I would go for either the MK, Tiger or Luego or maybe second hand Westfield. No particular order. Robin Hood could also be worth a look. There are plenty of websites dedicated to this marque too.

Do you want the pleasure of building it yourself or just driving the car? If you don't fancy the build then don't, there are plenty of secondhand kits out there.
