I'm looking to change my car around the middle/end of the summer, and have various ideas rattling around in my head, from a Clio 172 Cup to an old Caterfield. I was wondering what the running costs of a 7-type car with say, a mildly tuned zetec or X-Flow engine. It would be used a lot, probably more than most, so that has to be factored in as well. Anyone help?

The insurance on the dax is £195 with me and the better half on it fully comp with 5000 per year. I think that to go to an unlimited mileage would not be that much more.
Tax is tax I suppose which we all have to pay. As for "wear and tear" items then you really come across some great savings. If you want to run a standard 1600 x/flow in a "7" type car then what's the worst that can happen?, your driving along the road and the engine lets go for whatever reason. No probs, get a new one from a scrappy, overhaul it as needed for not a lot of money and then put it in the car. The Zetec will last forever as long as it's looked after, not driven sparingly but just looked after in terms of oil etc etc. Don't forget that the Zetec engine is designed for cars that weigh twice as much (at least) so it does have a serious effect of their ability to last for ages.
I would say do it but you have to make sure that you can cope with it all year round. I have been caught in some pretty nasty weather and it becomes real hard work to drive them as with most high powered rear wheel drive cars do. If your up for it then do it, what's the worst that can happen?

I'd buy an old 1.1 Fiesta or something like that as a run around, so it wouldn't be used everyday. Just a fair bit. I'll be 20 when and if I buy it, so insurance shouldn't be a huge problem. I'm thinking of taking a couple of years out of uni to have fun, and a Caterfield would certainly put a smile on my face! Just trying to see if it's financially viable
My Tiger Supersix is fitted with a mildly tuned 2 litre Pinto with twin 40 Webbers...
Insurance is 195 pounds fully comp, (limited to 3000pa), petrol consumption is not great at around 22 mpg,( but the acceleration makes up for it
) but imo it would NOT be practical to use as an all the year round car.....

My Tiger Cat is by far the cheapest car to run I've owned Insurance is less than half my Polo's at £600 fully comp limited to 500 miles (I'm 24 with 0 NCB, 3 points and 1 fault claim) so I wouldn't worry about that side of things.
Other than petrol, a Se7en style car is very easy on it's ware and tair components as they are so light. MPG is rubbish at about 15-25mpg depending on what you're doing with it
And you'll learn loads about cars as they're so easy to service yourself.

And you'll learn loads about cars as they're so easy to service yourself.Well, I own a Car Craft Cyclone (think of a '7' with a mid Engine really) as my only car and its great fun. The Cyclone is a bit more civilised than a '7' but isn't luxurious by any means...
I'm 28, self employed and the car costs me £440 a year to insure (unlimited mileage), including buisness use and the fact its my only car. MPG isn't great, it mainly depends on the weight of lead in my right foot :-) can get 30ish if I'm gentle.
The car doesn't leak when it rains, but steams up plently... though just taking it to Le Man last year down a french toll road behind a Cerbera made up for a whole winter of wiping the inside of the screen..
You only live once, get a missus with a tin top then if its really crappy outside you can use that...
