Hi all,

Looking for some prices on a set of lightweight 13 inch fors fitting alloys to suit a westy. Any ideas what wheels to go for, Minilites, Comopomotives etc etc? Any advice on suppliers also welcome.

Cheers

Adrian

No info on prices, but for minimum weight you'll probably struggle to find lighter than genuine magnesium alloy Minilites. Expect them to be more expensive than common old aluminium though.

They do have a web site though don't know the URL off hand, but I'm sure you'll be able to find it.

Otherwise you might want to consider some three-piece jobs from Image. See www.imagewheels.co.uk

Given the fatigue and corrosion prolems associated with mag alloy wheels I don't think they're suitable for general road use though?

Lotus used them on the Esprit Sport 350.

Depends what you mean by 'light', Mag minilites are certainly light, but not as light as your wallet will be.

Mag mini lites also burn with the kind of ferocity that the fire brigade cannot put out, My father saw 2 people burn to death and was helpless to rescue them due to the heat, light, and speed of the fire.

How light do you really need your car?

This should get you started:
www.wheelweights.net/

You will also want to consider the weight of your tyres. As I understand it, one of the main advantages of going for small rims / high profile tyres on a kit car is that the tyres are lighter than the rims so the overall package is lighter than big rims / low profiles. Of course this will be thrown out of the window if you spend a fortune on light rims then stick big lumps of rubber on them... Unfortunately, I can't find anything for weights of tyre although I'm sure I've seen something somewhere...

Ummm, Compomotive MO 7*17's at 21.3lbs * 4 = 85.2lb / 2.2lb/kg = 38.7Kg.

Even allowing for the spare, it's only 48.4Kg.

Your maths the same down there Essex way as up here in the real world?

For a more accurate conversion, try Google's calculator: www.google.co.uk/search?q=85.2lb%20in%20kg&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Careful if you buy Compomotive, I had a set of CXR's from Polly Motorsport and they were badly fisished, the valve holes needed to be refinished and there was paint missing from bits of the rim. The outsides were painted OK but overall not what you expect for £100+vat each. Halfords cheapo wheel and tyre packages are better finished and presented.

I had the same problems with my MOs, sent them back and they were much better after that. Not perfect, but not really noticable. I've just left the worst one as the spare...

The Fluke ones are made by MOG racing/RIAL in Germany. They pass TUV standards which for those of you that don't know are BLOODY HARD. They are light attractive and very well made.

I have heard of Compo CXRs being very badly finished and their attitude being very poor when they were confronted about it. The wheels in question looked like they could have been a refurbed set sold as new! There have also been a number of stress related failures with these.
