another "I've just done this"
Download the form from the VOSA site, send off to Swansea, they contact local centre who give you a date.
You can phone the centre direct and they will tell you the next slot. I phoned this morning and in Birmingham (garretts Green) the next one is April 11th!!

You need this (pdf) which has to go via snail mail to:
Welcombe House
91/92 The Strand
Swansea
SA1 2DH
With your local centre selected here
You also need to apply to your local VRO for registration inspection (where they decide if you will get a new/age related/Q plate). For us (Southampton) no actual inspection will be necessary, simply taking SVA pass to the VRO together with the fees, insurance certificate, and the VRO forms V55 and V627/1 (assuming donor vehicle used). If you do this at the same time as contacting the SVA tester it should be possible to have the registration done at least in same week as the SVA, if not the same day.
SVA tests have a lead time of 1 to 6 weeks typically
Edited to add: I don't know whereabouts you are, but don't go to Southampton if you can possibly avoid it. They're used to imports not kitcars and they take trainee inspectors who are reputedly over-zealous and know nowt. We got an old hand, but we still failed (failure on the first inspection seems to happen more often than not).

But 6 weeks, although not the answer I wanted, was the answer I needed
I might have to book the SVA before the kit arrives

Yes, you don't know the answer until the VRO have checked the paperwork and potentially carried out an inspection. (highly unlikely, but at their discretion)
You don't need to fill in a V627 as the certificate of newness from Caterham will act in lieu of this.
You do still need to attend the VRO with the following:
SVA certificate*
Valid insurance certificate
Road Tax fee
Government Bribe of £38 (first registration fee)
Completed V55/4
Declaration of newness
All receipts (catch them on a bad day and the lack of these will result in a Q plate, since January this has not been appealable )
Photo ID (Military warrant card, Police ID, photocard driving licence, passport)
*which will be retained
