Right! In preparation for picking up the kit, I need to decide what brakes I'm going to fit to this thing.

How the do you make a decision on what to fit?

4/6/8/10 pot? AP/Wilwood/Brembo/TarOx?

Help?!

To give a bit more rational info - they are to be fitted to donor Metro hubs. I can use Metro brakes () , the factory can supply MGF Trophy 4 pots or I can source my own from one of the usual suspects, but I have no idea how to go about deciding on which ones to go for!

Yep, and all metro's were fitted with the vented disks from a certain year anyway. Nothing wrong at all with the Metro brake setup in terms of stopping power. The calipers are a little on the heavy side though.

Once the car became 'Rover' and the hubs changed, the 'vented on everything' idea expired I believe.

Was there ever a Turbocharged Rover Metro????

Don't forget your GTM should weigh significantly less than a Metro, don't overbrake it. Talk to GTM and see what they recommend.

This is something I'm a little worried about. GTM offer the MGF Trophy 4 pots (made by AP?) as an option, but at £600 ish for fronts and £200 ish for rears, I thought I might be able to get a better setup for the money elsewhere...

We are going through a similar exercise for the rush but talking Sierras.

Question was answered when I got 2 brand new standard calipers off ebay for £87

Will see how they fare then possibly upgrade later.

THe weight saving should mean that it is not really an issue.

Have you read www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=82557&f=30&h=0 about the RAFFO BELVA.

2. The braking balance is wrong - hard braking even at 40 mph causes a potentially lethal skid. This is exacerbated by the fact that the front end is very light, and seems to lift slightly at anything over about 60mph.

I have also talked to Mark @ Marlin re 5exi brakes. They fit a bias valve to drop the pressure to the front. Apparently the brakes are ok in the dry but the front locks easily in the wet!

I'd keep to the standard stuff first and think about upgrading later if needed. As it's already been said, the car will be lots lighter than the donor.

The problem with Metro brakes on the Libra is they look so small through the wheels.

If you suffer from overbreaking disconnect the servo, or remove it.

Welcome Hugh!

Thanks for the input. To be honest, I hadn't even thought about the problem of aesthetics with the tiddly brakes. Looks like I'll definitely be going for something a little bigger then.

I'm pretty much decided that I'm going to go for MGF Trophy (305mm) front and rear or a 4 pot upgrade with 285mm discs front and maybe Rover 220 rears. Now all I need to do is find someone who's driven cars with both to give me a comparative view.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Just a quick update.

Having decided that it's only money, I've just added a set of new MGF Trophy brakes front and rear to my order with GTM. If I get even a hint of fade from these bloody things I'm not going to be happy.

I now have absolutely no idea quite how much my final invoice is going to come to by collection time. I'm not so sure I want to anymore

Just think of your initial costings - The price you told the missus it would cost

Then double it.

At least.

Then add a bit more for good measure.

At this point you may be as close as 80% of how much cash you will actually be parting with.

Why didn't you go to one of the specialist MGF breakers? there are two by me and I have sourced quite a few parts for my kit from them at a huge saving.

Trophy bits may be a little harder, but there are loads of "F's".

Best method is to find a Rover employee and sort a GO (think they still do them)

Main reason is that I want to go for as many new parts as is possible for a, peace of mind, b, to try to get a new registration assigned to the vehicle.

I also don't want to end up regretting something later on. I'm pretty sure I won't regret spending too much money, but spending too little and cutting corners and I may.

That's why I suggested the GO (general order) I live about five miles from Longbridge and there are one or two (thats about a third of the workforce!) employees who can get a huge discount on new parts with a receipt. It doesn't matter what you pay as long as they are new

I gave up on the new reg as I couldn't get hold of a "new" gearbox at the right price to go with my reconditioned engine , have bought a model specific personal reg instead.

Now that's a very interesting idea...

Any idea how I'd find a (the?) friendly MGR employee who might fancy ordering a 1.8 VVC K w/ PG1 'box?

LOL. Cheers anyway Nick. I have a colleague that lives practically opposite the gates to Longbridge so will see if he knows anyone.

Thanks for the pointer. Most interesting.
