Need to repack exhaust... Where to get Wadding???
Discussion
I need to repacka Wunoff exhaust as it is now reading around the 102 db mark.
I am going to remove the rear end of the silencer, and I am going to have to roll a sheet of some form of wadding around the inner silencer.
Any ideas where I can get some from????
I am thinking a retail outlet, so I can pick some up direct.
Dont suppose Halfords would have any??

If you're going to use CSM, make sure you wash the seize out of it first! It is impregnated with stuff that keeps it together in a mat. The "stuff" dissolves in styrene so it can change shape when full of resin. It also disolves in water so soak the mat and then dry the fibres. You'll need a lot more than you think! Use a long piece of bar or studding to "tamp" it down well - you can't pack it too dense! Also try "rockwool" but I don't know where you'd get it.

what is the legal noise limit of a car? I'm now worried, and how "loud" is that limit?
There is no practically enforceable noise limit. So long as there are no leaks in the system, there’s nothing the police can do.
The reason why it’s being discussed here, I suspect, has more to do with track day use than road use. Most tracks have some sort of noise limit. Usually 100 or 103dB.

whats the SVA limit? My car never got SVA'd (didn't need to).
The SVA limit is 101dB measured at 45 degrees from the exhaust. This in theory it is the legal requirement but we all know what happens when the SVAs over
However, as other's have mentioned there is not MOT limit so thus not really enforced. Mine is currently pretty loud as all the packing has pretty much burnt out (backfires a bit ) and I shan't bother quieting it down 'til I have to (i.e. trackdays)
In Brighton, at least, they guess, then they look for the correct kite markings on the silencer. If you haven't got that () they pack you off to the MoT centre.
I was told by a traffic officer that some forces test both cars and bikes to type approval limits, ie: 101dBA @ 3/4 max power speed in an open area with the sound meter half a metre away at 45deg from the exhaust outlet. I don't know the veracity of this though.
