20's/30's Bentley style replicas
Discussion
The Sherpley was a Bentley 'replica', but the guy who built it died. No idea what happened then.

I'd love one of those. Bit out of my league though - it seems to be very much 'if you have to ask the price you can't afford it'.
I was just idly browsing eBays for engines, dreaming of projects, when I found this;

Clearly it needs to go in a blower Bentley replica...

That is an extremely tasteful engine, and a damn good price, as long as it includes an ECUI was just idly browsing eBays for engines, dreaming of projects, when I found this;

The gearbox is good too, but I expect people will moan about the fact it is an auto. They shouldn't.

They never looked much like a Blower Bentley to be fair! http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/kitcar/kitcar_deta...
For the price of a decent replica you could get a genuine vintage sports car. Not a supercharged Bentley, admittedly, but something which would have the right feel for the period. My boss has a Derby Bentley special which goes surprisingly well, pushes all the right art decco buttons, but must still be worth less than the filler cap on a 4.5 Litre Blower!

Personally I really have no love at all for the big Bentleys. I'd take a Mk6 Special any day.Sam_68 said:

cough, O/T, Sam_68 did you get my email? cough!
Not yet, no. Sorry - I can't access my personal emails from work and I haven't been home for the last few days for a variety of reasons. I'll check tonight...
No - but it's time somebody did! I would start with a late 70's car. With the body removed but the floor temporarily retained, I would build a chassis to mount the suspension and drive train on. The body is straight forward in timber and aluminium. The wings and radiator cowling can be rolled to shape withe edges reinforced with metal brake pipe.
I live on the Isle of Wight. Several low volume cars have been produced here including the Frog Eye Sprite and Thrust 2. We have many aluminium fabricators, old school body craftsmen and trimmers. For replica wheels we would have to go to the mainland.
Disc brakes and suspension would have to be disguised but the result could be a Bentley with a sports body that WOB would be proud of. Please contact me if you want to pursue this dream.

I have plenty more pics of these cars, in one there are 4 and in another there are 5 Sherpley's present, however these pics are currently proving particularly hard to locate - if and when I find them I'll post them herein. the car featured in all the pics initially had a ford V6, which was soon replaced with a 4 litre Rolls/Bentley straight 6 engine and auto box. I drove it on many occasions it was horrible to drive & I hated it - It's Owner/Builder originally owned a real Bentley Speed 6, sadly [despite being a very successful self made billionaire] his face never fitted with the snots in the Bentley club - the Sherpley he built was his way of giving them all a 2 fingered V formation salute
After the Sherpley designer died a friend who'd always wanted to build a Sherpley bought all the molds etc, these were stored in another friends Barn, [who also ownrd a Sherpley at that time] they were stored there for a consisiderable period of time - [I remember seeing them there in the Barn on many occasions] However the 2 friends fellout [over the longterm storage of the molds etc], the Molds owner moved and having nowhere else to store them at that time they were left in the barn! it was at this point I lost touch with him, sadly the Barn owner died last year [RIP - RT] so I have no way of tracing the current whereabouts of the molds they may well have been dumped/sold for scrap, to pay for their storage, I know RT hated having them clog up his barn
AFAIK after buying the mold from Sherpley nothing was done - no other chassis or body panels were made after the original designer of the Sherpley Died.
Maybe someone on here knows where the molds are now??]
Hope this helps

I had one of these speed 4s I started to buy the kit off Brian Pickup in Yorkshire,but sadly he died before I bought much of the kit.I managed to get the steering ass the engine mounts wings bonnet and headlight shells also part of the handbrake ass. I then had to make the body myself,out of dozens of strips of ash 30"x 2" and 1/2 inch thick also all of the interior .I was great fun to drive ,built on a British Leyland chassis and running gear.I sold it to a gentleman in Wales who then sold it to someone in the south of France.If you see photos,mine was the wooden bodied Speed 4
Could anyone who has built one of these let me know what you used for wheels/tyres/hubs?
I am building something myself that will ideally have 21" wire wheels and the only cars I can find with these are early Bentleys. Looking at new reproduction Bentley parts it us coming in at around 8k for all four corners.
Would be good to know if there any alternatives.
Thanks.

the sec of the club that used to be south wales kit car club has one, it has a jag straight 6 in it, I saw the car at last years Coleford show in april - the SWKCC club allowed in tintops and all us keen kitcar guys were moved aside, sadly the club has all but disintigrated the tintop guys were into noisy exhaausts and 20" wheels you know the types,- Oh Well that's life
I'll try and find pic of the jag engined car from last year - watch this space

Here's the pic taken last april - as you can see the car is a very poor copy of the bently speed6, and must have cost the owner all of a coupla quid to build, or put another way - you could say it was built to 1970's kitcar standards The wheels is particular look awful - RT had his 21" wires, and pukka headlights made specially for his car.
I also saw the wooden bodied car [mentioned above] several years ago, it was for sale at Tredegar park classic car show. AFAIK it didn't sell, but the wooden body looked awful IMO.
The car pictured above which i posted earlier in this thread was the best Bentley speed 6 replica [sherpley] i ever saw - It was owned by RT [now sadly deceased] - I drove it many times it was terrible to drive, but I suspect better than every other Sherpley, please note my review is coming from a 50+ year owner of a Lotus7, which aint the most user friendly of cars either
good luck finding the jigs etc. they may still exist
