Hi all

I am building a BEC and an over for a honda vtr 1000 for around £500 (supposedly only has 2000 miles on it) this includes the clocks, electronics and all the other odds and sods, has any body used this type of engine or have experience of it in this type of application. any other points I should think about.

I've got a VTR1000 engine in my... err... VTR1000.

Just under 100bhp

The max torque is surprisingly high up the rev range (like 7000-odd RPM I think).

Feels gutless compared to my old Bandit 1200 and you really have to rev it to get a move on.

Clutch is snatchy, gearbox is a bit clunky but OK.

4000 mile service intervals

Carbs go out of balance regularly but other than that ultra-reliable, cheap and plentiful.

Why go for a twin and not a multi?

You forgot the fuel consumption figures.

I get 100 miles out of a 15L tank.

Don't think the fuel consumptions that bad, it's the crappy tank size.

I was looking at the engine as it seamed cheap and has all the bits I had originally planed on using a CBR 1000 but my budget is 500 or there about and I have not found any bike engines + eclectics + crabs + clocks for any thing like that.

My budge is tight

Edited so say I was also thinking that the engine would be more compact and was considering the advantages of a shorter engine. As it was intended to go in a home built middy

That's not bad at all.

I've known people to get 80 miles.

must be how they ride (always trying to keep up)

That was commuting to London in the summer, 110 on the M4, 80-90 off it, so I wasn't going particularly hard and it was all cruising. I've never actaully ridden it for fun... the bike mags typically report 100 mile ranges.

Blake,

They've certainly been used in BECs and if you like the idea of a twin why not? 100bhp isn't far off what you'd get in a 1000cc 4 anyway. It's a lot of engine for the money and it depends what you're used to.

Si.

Thanks for all the input.

I have decided to go with it as I have now found a some references to the engine being used in bec and coupled with the bang per buck factor I think it is right for me.

The BHP/Torque figures for bikes always confused me

A 916 is as/virtualy as fast in almost all cases as a fireblade, but the fireblade has 30% more happy power

Blah blah area under the torque curve blah blah. What I need is someone with a lot more time, inteligence and inclination than me to give some proposed 30-60 times for (guessing) a 400kg car with either a Fireplace, busa, VTR, Vmax, that beemer thumper, R1 engine etc

PS be interesting to see your design, I'm considering doind a similar thing myself. Need to build the garage to build it in first though

I would be happy to share some ideas however I only have back of old envelop drawings at present (literally for some of them). I was hoping to find a cheap/free CAD program that is not to hard to drive in the near future so I could do some proper pictures and the let other people have a look and hope they don’t laugh to loud.

My idears are based around the concept of a more modem locost i.e. mid engine taking I had started work on my iders when I found out about the terrapin witch seams simpler to what I was aiming for so if any one has a copy of the plans or photos of one I would be very interested.

I was also trying to use and many components from the locost seen as possible so that any old person could build one (i.e. me).
