Distinct lack of Progress

After seeing how much Alan (meerkat) has managed to achieve in 2.5 years, it really shows you how badly I've done in a year.

He's designed and built a complete car and I've managed to start with a complete car and reduce it to a pile of bits!

I know I promised SpartanAndy some pics a while ago so hopefully this will cheer him up when he sees the current state, (last two pics).

If anyone wants to offer advice on extra bracing they think the chassis might need, please let me know as any advice is appreciated. I will put a diagonal in the centre side section though, as I reckon that will help (well a little).

The plan is to replace the nice cart springs on the back with a five link setup based on the 'how to build a sportscar for £250' book and hopefully make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

I'll try and update the website with progress (dependant upon interest, let me know) although that may depend on how much time I spend in the garage.

Have you and Spartan_Andy got a little competition going on between you?

Is there a 'silk purse from a sow's ear' award at the end of this? Is the prize to wear a jumper like Den at the first show you go to when it's finished?

I wonder if anyone else has a car that they could enter too.

Good luck with the project. Give me a few months (or a year), I might even come round in the Marlin to see how you are getting on.

Now there's a thought.

What about, the last person to finish has to wear a jumper like Den to every show (and shopping trip with wife) until their car is complete.

Obviously if you don't do a good job, you forefeit and have to wear your new jumper until the other car is finished.

I wonder how Andy feels about this?
I wonder if Den will donate a jumper as booby prize?

I can report that peetbee must have cleared the garage up before taking those pictures. Last week when I went round the chassis wasn't even visible.

He's even taken to bribing me with offers of plates of beef casserole if I go round his house to help!!
so I'll be round in the (landrover) tomorrow night Pete.

and I seem to recall an offer of free for the whole of 2004...or was I imagining that bit?

That took me the complete weekend, I'm convinced I took some stuff to the tip that I'll need later!

Anyway, you helped me take it apart so I think it's fair you help me put it back together again

couple of sugestions, yes the live axle - DO IT, it changes the handling greatly if my memory serves me correctly chavette arms could be used with the escort axle . otherwise I have an easy setup that works on a locost that would work well for you . secondly cut the top off the drivers footwell and put a removable plate in , it makes working on the pedals so much easier and dont forget to reinforce the pedal baulkhead it changes the feel of the pedals when it doesn't flex anymore . (working from memory 20 years ago)

Thanks Ozzie Dave, The thing that would stop me cutting the top off the pedal box is that it's part of the fibreglass bodyshell and I wouldn't want to weaken it. I thought of putting a steel plate on the front of the pedal box and a brace going towards the chassis (provided there's enough space) to add more strength.

The axle will be done in a very similar way to the locost, I've even got the trailing arms ready, just need to sort out the brackets (tonight's job)

Ex-Biker: I'm tempted to do the chassis in this paint, but do I go for black or silver?! I'll leave the other bits (wishbones & uprights) in red as they'll be on display afterwards, I'm going to respray the bodywork in the same red.

Sorry Andy, but I'd never finish it if I didn't get some help, especially as I can't weld (yet) so 5 linking the rear would be challenging to say the least!

I've decided that the silver paint from Frosts sounds good. Has anyone else apart from daxtojeiro used it?

Tonight was spent designing and sorting the measurements for the axle brackets, I've now got to find some 3mm steel plate.

Depending how much steel plate you want, try visiting a local engineering firm. Small bits are easily scroungeable (as most is scrap) and often they will sell you larger stuff a fair bit cheaper than you can get.

I have been offered a sheet of 8'x4' aluminium for £16.
