Limited Mileage Insurance
Discussion
Due to all this nice weather we have been having, I've had to extend my limited mileage policy. I did have it for 4500 miles and the only option was to extend to 6000 miles. This has cost an extra £192, which was a lot more than I was expecting. I was wondering how much extra other people had been charged to extend their policies? Does what I have paid sound reasonable to you?
I’d say that adding 55% to your premium for a 33% increase in mileage is a bit steep.
Especially as the risk isn’t strictly proportional to the mileage, but more to how those miles are covered.
I reckon you’ve been a victim of rip off Britain.
I think that had you said 6,000 miles in the first place, the premium wouldn’t have been much over the £350 you paid in the first place.
Sorry to be negative.

I'm with Footman James. I'm 28, with a clean licence(at the moment!)and no claims. I had three points about 5 or 6 years ago but that's it. I was wondering whether it would be worth my while cancelling the insurance now and shopping elsewhere, rather than waiting until March when my renewal is due. I can remember at the time that I took out the insurance that the price jump from 4500 to 6000 miles was quite large, which was why I didn't go for the 6000 mile policy at that time. I must admit that I didn't bother shopping around at that time as I was already insured with Footman James when I had my Elan Plus 2, and it was easy to just extend the policy to my Westfield.

Adam,
You’re in a tough position, but your idea of cutting and running isn’t such a bad idea.
Let’s look at the two possibilities.
You pay £192 now for 3 or 4 months cover
Or
You look for a new insurance for the next 12 months at an unknown (at the moment) price.
I don’t know what a 28 year old, with a clean licence (spent convictions) and no accidents should be paying. However, from what I know and what John has said I reckon it should be about £192.
There’s a thread on here somewhere on which a kind sole wrote all the insurers (who advertise in Kit Car, naughty boy) telephone numbers.
I reckon an hour on the phone shall be well spent.

Just dump the policy and start afresh.I will go back to Backford Bloor and co when my policy runs out. They use Ecliastical Ins and I had the mis-fortune of needing it a few years ago and they were spot on.I'm with Adrian Flux at the moment for my Westie, just because I sold my TVR and bought a Westie at short notice and they had my details. The bad point with them is that when I asked to spread paynents due to having to buy the car that month, was another £30 a month extra for admin.Backford previously charged a nominal fee. Can't find their number, but Kitcarman should know it.

Sorry I should have said that I am with Adrian Flux and I find them fairly reasonable although I have never had to make a claim (touching wood). For what it's worth I am 27, clean licence (although had 7 points 5 years ago) and my car is garaged so you should be looking at about the same, maybe a bit more because yours is a Zetec.

Just got a quote from Roadsure, it would be £258 for 5000 miles or £284 for 7000 miles, which seemed like quite a good price. I thought that before I rang any more, I would make sure that my current insurers would refund me some money. They said that because I had less than 6 months to go on my policy then no refunds could be given, which I didn't mind too much, however, they wouldn't be able to refund the £190 that I paid on Monday to increase my mileage. I wish I had thought at the time that it seemed excessive, but I guess we learn from our mistakes. This does mean that they have lost me as a customer when my renewal is due. Thanks again for all your suggestions!

Much cheaper to remove the speedo cable from the most accessible end, when you are getting close to the stated mileage!
'em, I heard of someone that did that once.
I (I mean they) was in the forces at the time. A couple of us took a forces car on an overnight trip near Telford. Once we had dropped off the kit, we diconnected the speedo, my mate stayed with a girl in Wolverhampton and I went up to see stay with one in Chester (as you do).
All was going well until I got a parking ticket while in Chester (only 40 miles from where I should have been).
Panic calling of local authority was called for.
