Hello m'learned fellows - I know not much about crossflows and their attachments, and it has come about that I need to top up the oil in the gearbox. Only problem is, I don't know what the hell I'm looking for! how do I do it? I feel like such a numpty...

the gearbox is the 4 speed bell housing type from an escort mexico if that helps

Don’t worry about it pal, we’ve all been there.

There’s a screw-in plug in the side of the gearbox, about 2/3’s the way up on the passenger side I think. Unscrew it. Wiggle the plastic tube (that comes with a bottle of gearbox oil) into the hole and squeeze. Stop when it starts dribbling on you and then put the plug back.

BTW don’t let it dribble on you.

No pal,
Just struck lucky, as my second car was a Mk1 Escort that dribbled oil out of its propshaft oil seal. Not profusely enough for me to bother changing it, but enough to force me under the car every 3 months to top up the lube.
First automotive tool I brought (as opposed to nicked from my dads tool box) was a sump plug spanner – Halfords 95p (or was it 19 shillings?)

Must say that those early Ford boxes were the bizz.
