Hello all, today while out in newcastle I had a blast with a griff 500 & bu66ered my baulk ring/syncro/summat like that - I need the 'box rebuilt but I wondered whether a second hand box might be cheaper. I know it won't be as good but money is an issue here can anyone recommend where to look? I've already googled it & came up empty...

It's a crossflow 4-speed from an early escort - If it helps I have the full spec

Just might be able to help.

A classified advertiser wrote into Kit Car with a list of Pinto engines and boxes he was selling. At the end of his list was a 1300cc crossflow c/w with box for £150 all up. Claimed mileage was 60,000.

I’ll e-mail you a number when the proofs arrive with me sometime tomorrow (err later today I mean).

I’m off to

Good night, Den.

wow! that's great kitcarman - will the 1300cc box take the strain of a tuned 1700cc X-Flow? it has about 115 at the flywheel...thanks

you could try Speed Shack in Yiewsley, middlesex on 01895 449065 or www.speedshack.co.uk they will probably have 4 speed RS2000 boxes coming out their ears.

You really need an Escort SPORT box out of a 1600 Mk 2. It's stronger than the ORDINARY Esgrot box. Recognised by the cast ali remote tube rather than the seperate MS one. Try Motoring News Classifieds, Yukspeed in Yorkshire, or surely one of the breakers around the toon have one. Try Gosforth Metals/A1/Tyne Tees/the notice board at Tynemouth & DMC. Don't know any of the comp lads in the area any more as I'm a bit out of touch.
Or you could go 5speed....

In a word, no - or at least not for long. Gearboxes for smaller capacity crossflows (1100 & 1300) are easy to identify because they have an integral bellhousing. These are OK on standard cars but tend to go bang when mated to tuned 1700s. Seem to remember a mate who used to rally a Mk 1 Escort going through 3 before giving up and getting a proper gearbox.

That means a gearbox with a seperate bellhousing as used on Cortinas and Capris (including Pinto versions). Or of course the favourite of hot Escort drivers and the one fitted as standard on Mexicos etc, the legendary 2000E box - if you can find one.

Tom,

Maybe yours was fitted with the Xflow box from a smaller engine, hence the reason it blew? Do you know what gearbox was in it? i.e what size engine it was mated to?

Anyway, hows it looking for the trackday? Shall I book you in or have you done it?

BTW, my phone is buggered and I cant seem to send you emails...your account full or somethin?
