I have been offered a cobra replica for about 6.5k. I don't know a great deal about these replica cars, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on the web for them. beautiful to look at, but how do they perform handling, and preformance wise?? I know it is the 3.5, but don't know if it is the old rover V8, or the chevy block. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Andy

Andy,

With Cobra's AFAIK it all depends on which kit you are talking about. At £6.5k it sounds like a good deal dependant on condition and level of finish. It sounds like it is probably a Pilgrim - Sierra based. IMHO they don't look right as the wheel offsets and wheel widths on the rear are hampered by the suspension used and as such don't have the stance of the original Cobra.

From a handling point of view, they were never traditionally brilliant although some of the better makes (Dax/GD) are a lot better now.

I think they are a lot more of a pose car and a hell of a pose at that.

From my opinion, if you like them, fit, enjoy driving them go for it. Just make sure the one you have been offered is worth the money.......

Not much inf on cobras - you are kidding arent you.

Try www.ac427.com for a dedicated cobra forum (you have to look further than the bitchy remarks that seem to fill the threads) but people will generally help you out if you give them the right information.

Also go to Madabout-kitcars.com go to the manufacturers section and filter the list to cobra replicas by clicking on the cobra icon. This will list all the manufacturers of cobra replicas. See if any of them match up to the car you are being offered. Typical giveaways would be door handles for early pilgrims or seat belt anchors on top of the body work thats behind the occupants, wide front wheel arches = Viper.

Hope this helps

Cheers John

Hi Andy,

This will almost certainly be a Rover Engined car. 6.5k is about as cheap as they come, but STILL A HELL OF A LOT OF MONEY TO LOSE if you buy a pup!!!!

My advice is ask around, think long and hard and look before you leap, this of course applies to ANY secondhand car but especially kit cars.

I have a friend who built a Sumo around twelve years ago, I was mildly interested in it last year, when he said he might sell it for around 7k, but he has since admitted it's a "dog", even though from the photos I have seen it looks superb. (these could have been taken ten years ago).

Just be careful......

Cheers, Alan.

There is tons of info on the web about Cobras, the best U.K. site is without doubt the UK Cobra replica club at www.cobraclub.com have a good look on there and you should be able to get all the stuff you need to know. The most important thing about buying a kit car of any type is that it's registered correctly, ie if it's a Dax for instance it should say Dax on the registration document and not whatever the donor car was,if it doesn't the best thing you can do is walk away! Good luck and i hope this helps.
