I just bought a pre lit Westy - here it is:

It has a 1658cc crossflow.... so for a bit more reliability, I thought about a 1800 or 2000 zetec - any idea how much or if this is a good idea? I absolutely adore it already! I experienced my first proper oversteer, and have never driven anything so fast!

Fitting a Zetec is a lot cheaper than people originally think - You already have an exhaust cut out on the right side, a ford gearbox and a pair of Webers (I read another posting).

Zetec install, if self done would cost approx £800 - 1000 and give you 155hp or 165 if you went 2.0L.

Cheers,
Mark

Would a zetec bolt straight on to the xflow bell housing? I would have thought that you'd need an engine, the bell housing, possibly a clutch, a manifold, an exhaust... could you really get all that for 800-1000?

Call up Raceline, they should be able to give you some advice as they almost pioneered the zetec conversion for caterfields.

Raceline will rip you off cash wise - quality they are first class but you need to pay.

I am doing this engine change on my Sylva Stylus at present, rough costs are:
Engine - £250
Inlet Manifold - £60
Exhaust Manifold - 140
Sump Mods - £50
Alternator Mods - £50
Clutch/Spigot Bearing - £70
ECU - £100 - 400 depending on whether you use the standard Mondeo/Escort ECU or an aftermarket.
You will also need to rejet the carbs.

I used to think this would cost in excess of £2k, but after a lot of research these are real figures, there are millions of engines out there now, so you should be able to pick up a low mileage engine for this sort of money.

Bell housing, the zetec will bolt straight up to it, with the same clutch release geometry.

If you need any further info, email me off line...

Why do you need a chip if you are using something like twin 40 webbers and therefore aren't using the fuel-injection and won't be using the airflow meters?

You need the ECU to run the ignition mapping for advance and retard spark. They also don't have a distributor!

Bit of an O/T but whats the history of the 1.7 x-flow?
i.e who makes it, when did they make it?

The Crossflow is a ford unit - came in a few capacities over the years. Most common are the 1300, 1300GT (more power?), 1600 and 1700. IIRC they can be sourced from early Ford Escorts, although these are becoming harder and harder to find.

So the 1.7 is basically bored out version of the 1.6?
Or is it from a different family of engines?
