Engines and the SVA

I have, by cahnce acquired a 4.6 v8 out of a ranage rover. It is probably a post 94 vintage. Anybody know what the implications are for SVA? The ideal plan is to put a big carb on it but does SVA demand cats? Could I put the engine number on an older range rover V5 and use this as proof of age and thereby avoid the EFI route?

If the engine is post August '95 then you must pass cat emissions. You could build your car with an old Rover V8 from a scrappers and put your engine in afterwards.

You will need to find out the age of the engine AND get written proof of it. The best way is to get something on a Rover letterhead (a dealer might be OK) stating that engine No. XXXXX was built between dd/mm/yy/ and dd/mm/yy. The Vehicle Inspectorate will accept this but will take the later of the two dates. If you are an amateur builder AND you are putting it in a passenger car, you will be OK for non-cat emissions up to 31/07/95. The relevant limits are 3.5% CO and 1200ppm HC. Any MOT test station will be able to chack these for you.
