im looking at possible donor windscreens for me car and was walking past a mondeo today and thought the rear window was the ideal shape, but has demister grids on it. now, the SVA manual says you are allowed no more than "0.03mm of visible width" but does this mean the actual width, or taking into account perspective kind of thing? (exagurated example: we all know tha moon is thousands of miles accross but only looks a couple of inches from this distance) if i could use a rear windscreen in this way, i would be saving quite a bit of money, not only on the screen itself (lancia stratos screen from hawk is about 600 quid) but also on a heater, which will also save on weight.

Cheers for yer help,

Russ.

Best to ask at the SVA station you're most likely to use, but don't think you'll get much joy. Also bear in mind a rear screen will be toughened, not laminated.

You may be able to get one without the heater elements fitted? Your local friendly screen fitter would be my first call. If no joy, try the manufacturer, or ask you kit supplier to approach a manufacturer.

As said, it will be toughened and not laminated. It'll come kite marked but I'm not sure if your allowed to fit to the front.

The elements may be too big. You are allowed up to 1mm wide for elements that are printed on to the glass (I think most are these days). The size restriction applies literally - i.e. the width of the actual elements. I think most rear screen elements are too big. I think Robin Hood tried the idea some time ago.

As far as having a toughened windscreen is concerned, this isn't a problem. Any glass off a mass produced car will be approved to ECE Reg. 43 (look for the capital letter "E" in a circle followed by 43R and the approval number. This is perfectly acceptable for SVA.

Why not SVA it with no windscreen - it's only a requirement if its fitted

cheers people, not sure if i could get away with not having the screen fitted for the sva cos there will be a frame and a roof where a window should be so it would look a bit suspect, worth thinking about tho. ill try and do some recon' with the tape measure next time i see a mondeo parked up somewhere, snd keep looking for alternatives, the noble m12 looks promising at about 500 quid including delivery.

Cheers again,

Russ.
