Hi,

I have a Dax Rush with a two litre pinto on a set of 45 Webers that decided to die yesterday ( the engine not the Webers). I have had the royal seal of approval from the good lady wife to buy a new engine ( and 5 speed gearbox while I'm there) from a specialised performance engine builder. I have spoken to Vulcan, Specialised Engines and Burton but I was wondering if there are any more options out there. Also has anybody used the above companies and what are there options?

Thanks

If you've got a pair of decent Webers, why don't you consider a Vauxhall 2.0 XE 16v engine. On Webers, with a distributor, you should be looking at an easy 165hp. If you then went on to managed ignition, 210hp is esily achievable with a set of QEd (Or similar) cams.

For reasonable bellhousing/sump prices look at www.yukspeed.??? (Use Google) who sell them reasonably. Alternatively have a look on www.blatchat.com (Caterham website) for people who may be selling bits.

The VX engine is really strong and will cost a lot less to get over 200 hp!

Are the inlet and exhaust manifolds on the same side on the Vauxhall as they are on the Pinto?. I looked at the Vx unit and I must admit they do look a better unit. As for the Webers they are brand new and have only been on the engine for about 10 miles. Thanks for the help.

I think they may be on opposite sides, the VX is the same as an Xflow. (Exhaust nearside - inlet offside)

Do you have problems with cut outs on the car??

Good luck,

Mark

Afraid so, I am going to go for the 155 bhp pinto from specialised engines because I think that to change engine to anything but a pinto would be a nightmare and I would be better off selling the car and starting again.

Thanks for your help

looks like a lot of money for a heavy badly designed low performance 8valve(regardles of how well its been put together).
personaly i would look at a zetec not much lighter but revs better, sounds better, bolts anywhere a pinto has been, with some minor mods.
ok you would have to buy new inlet and exhaust manifolds but would be a more modern engine better fuel economy/ready for unleaded use.
however before you go off spending tons of money just how bad did the last moter let go?
was it a rods through the sides type falure or a malignant vavetrain type failure.
because the things that are good about pinto's are that they are very easy to work on and you can get perfectly good bits from any scrapyard for peanuts.
and if you must have a pinto what about the 2 litre 16v cosworth turbo, its still a pinto it comes with an almost unburstable 5 speed box and even in standard form does 200 ponies
