Just reading your diary (good stuff BTW) and noticed this:

Then I was measuing up the cycle wings and found on not quite full lock they'd foul on the lights.

Common problem. What you need are a set of lock stops from Cat Motorsport (£10) they fit onto your steering rack. As you'll also find that when you swap the lights the back of your cycle wings will then foul the body work (the Snotmobile is exactly this setup).

If you haven't aleady got one, kill two birds with one stone and swap out the standard rack with a 2.2 quick rack with lockstops (makes is 1.9 turns lock to lock). I cannot emphasise enough how much better this will be as the standard rack is geared very poorly for something as small and light as a Westie. The Cat racks are about the best value out there and it costs a lot more to get better (Titan).

John,

I was thinking of buying a Cat q/r, what is the cost as their website keeps throwing me off, it's probably my computer, but I'm yet to find out.

Cheers,

Graham

About £130 for the 2.2 with lockstops IIRC. May be a little less.

That's not bad, I was looking into getting fluke's proper quick rack but that's £300, well it will be.

I'll have to look into Cat a bit more, need to get some cat stickers for the SS too so will see what the finances are like.

Cheers again,

Graham

From www.catmotorsport.com though I think they haven't updated it in a while as I'm sure they're more now:

Exchange Escort steering rack (1.9 turns lock to lock, with lock stops) Nylon bushed & standard track - £89.50

Cheers John,

What are they like to fit, and how easy is it to get the old one off, just a case of undoing some bolts or do i need specialist tools?

Cheers again.

Not difficult. No specialist tools required. Use a piece of string to measure your alignment before you start so you can get the new rack the same. Fine adjustment will probably see you down at the local tyre fitters to get the toe set up spot on.

Excellent, at the moment, I have NO cash due to the unexpected £190 for the new cylinder head so I probably would have bought a quick rack with that money.

When it's all rebuilt, if I get any fouling then I shall buy a quick rack but if it's ok, the quick rack can wait till I am better and am employed.

Complete change of subject though John, I know you have a stick on plate on the PPE now, your old plate looks pretty small, smaller than halfords ones, where did you get it from? I'm in need of one.

Cheers

The original front plate text was motorbike sized. Unfortunately no-one will make one this size anymore. I then had the dilemma that a full sized plate would be about 1" from the floor so would last about 5 minutes. I could mount one further up the nose but that would obstruct airflow to the rad and given that the Cossie needs some cooling, that was out.

So I was stuck with a stick on. These are also illegal but I think the cops tend to turn a blind eye as it's obviously impractical to have a full sized plate on one of these cars. As long as they can read the stick on very easily I don't think it's an issue. Though a jobsworth could take an exception for that I can pull the age card as mine is registered as a 1975 car and IIRC they were still legal then.

Getting anything other than a standard plate these days is a real pain in the arse

Thought so, I think probably the best thing to do is to go to a motorbike shop and see what they have to offer, or get one made up myself although this could be rather risky, I don't know, as you said, a standard plate wouldn't last 5 mins.

Cheers

Hi Graham,

I got my stick-on plates made up to bespoke sizes I wanted from www.gtgrafix.com
I'm actually not running with a plate on the front of the car at the moment - by the letter of the law there is nowhere to fit one (without impeding airflow to the radiators - mine has the extra nosecone aperture for the big oil cooler). First offence for this is £30 on the spot fine, at which point I will have to fit one.
My housemate has been running around without one for a while now without any trouble.

Oh and now you've both got me looking at quick racks - thanks alot :harumph:

Moom,

That's brilliant, I think I'll get a small one made up.

Cheers,

Graham

P.S. You know you want a quick rack

No probs mate.

And you know I know I want a quick rack. Justification = seems sensible thing to do as I am getting a whizzy Terry Nightingale suspension setup done soon - it'd be foolish to screw that up by changing the rack a couple of weeks later!

OOh, even more reason to get one, it would handle lovely after all that.

About the plates,

I have the V5 document but the previous owner hasnt signed it so it's not registered to us, does this matter?

I think you'll find that GTGrafix will ask you no questons.... :nudgenudgewinkwinksaynomore:

They made me up a ludicrously small front plate, cos I just picked an arbitrary width which won't look too huge on the nose, and then scaled the rest of the plate in proportion.

Unfortunately they do ask,

The email they sent me says:On the 1st of January 2002 the law for people like us who make registration plates changed. In short, the government are now getting us and companies like us to collect information for the police so as registration plates may not be purchased and used in crime. It would appear that some folk buy registration plates, fit them to stolen cars and then use that vehicle to commit crime, armed robberies, joy riding, etc..... By getting companies like us to collect information about the purchaser, we are assisting the police in reducing crime. If your purchase is perfectly honest then you don't have a thing to worry about.

Because you have placed your order on-line and given your home address and card payment details, we almost have everything we need from you anyway. What we need from you now though is one of the following:
a copy of your V5 document (this is commonly known as your 'log book')
a copy of your V11 document (this is the thing you get in the post when your road tax is almost up)
a copy of your V778 document (cherished transfer retention document)
(each of these documents will show the registration number and as such means you have the right to purchase plates which show that number - again you only need supply one of the three !!!!!!!!!)

But it's not registered to me YET, my mum's writing the guy a letter to ask huim if he can sign it for us, so is it essential that it's my address on the Document?

Ah I forgot the law was changing (for the better).
You'll have to (and should really want to!) get the V5 thing sorted then I think.

Good luck.

Well I ordered the smallest they do (7x20cm) which apparently is still legal, but we'll see.

It won't be used on the roads that much this year as I can't afford the £5000 insurance at 17, so it'll be a few covernotes for PH meets and sunny day blats.

Cheers again.
