Hi, I am building a Stuart Taylor Phoenix with a tvr 3.9 engine. I am trying to sort out the exhaust system but everywhere I turn it seem sthat I'll have to spend around £1000 on it so I have decided to build it myself. I have a pipe bender and will be buying a tig welder. What I need to know is where the best place to buy the parts and if I need to watch out for any thing. Any advice would be gratefull. Regards
Alain

Hi Alain,

I don't have any first hand knowledge of making exhaust manifolds, but I know a little about fabrication work and would advise you to maybe consider getting someone else to do it for you if it's your first attempt. You say you need to get a Tig welder, do you have any experience of welding stainless steel? especially the thin wall required for a lightweight system. Not meaning to put you off, maybe you've done that sort of thing before, but you need to be quite experienced and have a top notch welder. Buy the best you can afford, bigger than 160Amp would be best. I beleive Pureshield Argon works well for most applications, though I may be wrong.

Have you looked at www.striker1.plus.com/ there are details on there of system fabricated by Custom Fabrications of Attleborough, Norfolk. There are costs on the site, but I think it could come in under £1000 for a V8 and the quality of workmanship looks good.

Hope I haven't put you off too much.

Good Luck

Tom

Alain,

That seems to be a lot of work to go to, I have done a lot of research in exhausts, etc. Can I suggest, if you haven't already, give the following a good look at:

Powerspeed - 01233 720 467 (Dave) - These guys are based in Kent and may well be able to help you, particularly with manifold, but may also be able to do the whole exhaust too.

Also, and I appreciate on the face of it may be a bit 'Max Power' but do have a look at Powerflow (01392 203 050)/Longlife (exhausts. These guys make up the systems on your car, they have a variety of silencers/tailpipes you can choose.

Websites are:
www.powerspeed.co.uk
www.powerflow.uk.com

I am currently (and constantly) modding a SSC Stylus and will be getting another manifold from Powerspeed, when I fit the Zetec and also a Powerflow system to replace the one I have now.

This may prove to be better/cheaper (in the long run) than home build.

Hi Alain,

Have a word with Custom Chrome in Nuneaton. They sell all the bits you need to make your own exhaust system, including a range of different angle bends, silencers, flanges etc. They also do a range of manifolds as well as kits to make your own.

All you need to do is figure out what you need, order the bits and weld them together. Think the bits are only available in mild steel, for which a decent MIG welder is fine.

Having said that, Custom Chrome do make stainless silencers so might be worth asking if they also make the bits in stainless too if that's what you really want. Not so easy to weld though.

Find out more at www.custom-chrome.co.uk

Cheers lads, I think I am going to build it myself I can't justify the expense. I can gett all the hardware for £150 and I'll just have to weld it myself. Might get someone to polish the stainless for me though.
