Importing a replica kit car from EU to UK

Hi all. I have what I think is a fairly unique situation that I'd appreciate some input on, as I reckon someone out there has done the same thing.
I've seen a kit car in France that is not so far away that I couldn't drive it myself to Calais and ferry it back. That's not so unusual, and I've done lots of research about the process once it's back here. The donor car was made in 1981 which shows on the French "carte gris". My understanding is that with cars over 30 years, the VAT drops to 5%, which is good. However, I've also heard that if it's a replica or kit then this no longer counts and we're back up to the normal rate.
Is this correct? Can anyone attest to having done something like this post-Brexit?
