Type 9 gearbox external hydraulic conversion
Discussion
Hi everyone, new to this site, have just acquired a Fisher Fury which has a 2 litre Pinto, type 9 box and cable operated clutch. Clutch is a bit vicious so am thinking of an external hydraulic conversion, has anyone done something similar any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.
By external, do you mean a slave cylinder that is outside the bell housing and operates the clutch release arm?
If so that is a challenge. I spent a long time researching this for a Westfield a good few years ago, the principle problem is most clutch hydraulic cylinders push, so for the type 9, it would then need mounting behind the clutch release arm, and as the bell housing and gearbox taper away there is nothing to mount it to, also I’d imagine the Fury has the same space issue as a Westfield and there isn’t any room for it.
I did find one pull cylinder, that could be mounted broadly where the clutch cable goes, but it was furiously expensive so I never actually bothered measuring to see if it would fit.
I suspect this is why most hydraulic clutch’s use concentric cylinders.

Hi thanks for your replys, yes I did mean one attached to the bell housing, seems there are some kits on ebay, and also people have done conversions on Escorts and Cortinas, but you are right there is not much room similar to a Westfield.
It's early days so will see if the cable run, bends etc are the problem and maybe better adjustment, was just looking for ideas at this stage. Probably thinking too far ahead at this stage.
Thanks again.
